The forest was green, wild, and dark. Sunlight broke through here and there but it was faint and there was little light for the girl's eyes. She sat on a wide, low stump of some once massive and majestic tree. Her dress was simple, as was that of most village girls, and small enough that it clung to her body and drew attention to the curves of her ripe, lush body in the blossom of young womanhood at barely nineteen years of age. Her hair was the green of new spring leaves, long and pulled over her shoulders into a ponytail that fell to the middle of her back. Her eyes were green also, though a deeper forest hue, and her face was delicate and pretty. She looked human enough, save for her ears. They were slightly longer than normal and pointed, the only obvious mark of her half-elf heritage, and the reason she was out here.
Sayuri had always stood out in town; her half-elven blood making her strange and different than the others. She was never mistreated but she knew she was separate and apart.
She shifted on the rough wood of the stump, her keener than human eyes seeing easily despite the dimness. The beast was out there, somewhere. And it would be coming for her.
It had come to the village, though she had been away at the time, and spoken to the elders. None of them had spoken of what had passed but rumor was that the creature came to them with an offer; one nubile young woman or it would attack the village and take all it wanted.
So it was that she had been chosen and left out here for it. Sayuri felt some resentment but at the same time, she was a part of the village. If it meant that the others would be safe...then she would endure the horrors it would inflict on her.
Or so she told herself in her mind, over and over again.
