I think you missed the point a bit. They needed a song about NY as they want to get to Nationals which are in NY. I love Empure State of Mind. Also it takes alot for some artists or their reps. to give the ok.

Normally I wouldn't be excited about that, but they always create great arrangements of songs, even if I didn't like the originals much. Gonna watch the new episode today. As for the season premiere being a bit disappointing, it reminds me of the episode called "Home" last season. All of my college acquaintances who enjoy the show felt that the episode was lacking and it just wasn't that good. I kinda felt the same way, but reminded them that of course it wasn't going to seem that good, it was follow the Madonna episode. As a season premiere after last year's season finale, and last season in general, it has a lot to live up to.

No I saw the connection...just found it ironic that their attempt to refute the suggestions that music choices were stale and dated was to choose a song that is in fact a bit dated (maybe I am letting my own dislike of the song color my opinion lol). Btw, given the boost that occurs from being featured on the show and the pc nature of its content, I don't think many artists would refuse a request for their material.
