It was the most fun Beth ever had at a game. Her old band mates were kinda as always and it was fun to play together again. Most of them had not continued playing music as Beth had so she shined, both musically as well as physically. A few commented on how good she looked but most were reserved and treated her like old Beth, the clarinet player.
Jake appearing as she was looking for Maggie was a surprise, a pleasant one as she immediately felt the attraction again.
"Hey there football star" she said finding her local accent, "looking for a debutante for the back seat of your car?" making a sexy as hell joke from a John Cougar lyric.
She smiled as the football star blushed and she slipped her arm into his. "I could use a drink" she said beaming up at Jake. She had fantasized about Jake Daniels since junior high and now here he was. In the flesh, in her arm and he was looking at her like a starving man looks at a piece of cherry pie.
"Where did Maggie run off to?" she asked scanning the crowd for her friend. "We can catch up with her at the dance I guess" Beth said as they headed towards the tailgate.
"nice speech, not what I think everyone was expecting, but..." she paused and looked at him, "thoughtful" she finally landed on and slid her hand down and interlaced her small thin fingers into his meaty paw.
They reached the tailgate which was getting taken down, but they managed two beers from the cooler before it was loaded up.
The dance was at the high school gym, of course. It was about a half mile from the stadium. Most people drove but there was a path through some woods that separated the two. As they walked the crowd thinned, most people getting in cars and from their sizes Beth knew they were not the kind to walk when a ride was available, let alone exercise.
The woods were lit by a three quarter moon and quiet after the whole game. Beth still carried her Clarinet in it's case and they made small talk about the game. They hardly knew any of the same people but she had to ask.
"What happened to Mary Ann?" she said remembering how they were the couple back in the day. He gave a quick and simple explanation of the truth which she could see was not something was proud of or wanted to talk about.
About halfway she looked back and determined they were pretty much alone. Even though she still whispered "wanna get high before the dance? God that's so high school, we used to come to these woods at lunch at get high" she said with a laugh. She opened her Clarinet case and pulled a joint and a lighter.
