Good Sports

I lift heavy things. Now that the weather has gone all lovely again, I need to PM my bike and hit the trails. Well, actually hit the street to find my wind, then hit the trails.

I also occasionally put holes in paper with things what go bang. I don't really see it as a sport, but some do. (It's more of a sport than "sport" hunting though.)

In the past, I've done MMA, lifted heavy things, and did a stint in little league, whee. I couldn't for the life of me understand why the coach made us run laps around the field instead of baseline sprints. Still don't understand it.

Mostly women's sport (with some mixed and men's comps) generally played in Aus, NZ, UK.

Played at the Commonwealth Games, I think there's also a world championship.. and we have a national league.

Locally, it's popular in the country. The men and boys play (Australian) football on Saturdays, the women and girls play netball.

Random clip.. a tad long, but the highlight vids are all shite
Very cool - thanks. That looks like basketball, with no dribbling and no backboards.

Back when Katelyn played, the other moms and I called it the "last only girls sport." LOL I wonder why it's like that here?

Probably because, over here, people recognise it's a sport for complete maniacs who have very little sense of self-preservation and frequently, even fewer teeth.

Yeah, the basic concepts are very similiar.

Also, there's more players on the court, players playing certain positions can only go into certain areas of the court (you may have noticed some people hanging outside the goal ring for instance) and it's *supposed* to be non contact in the 'no smacking the ball directly out of someone else's hands' kind of way.

There are a few team sports that I love, but the leagues around here don't fit my schedule. Sucks. Anyway, love running, love walking, love yoga. I really think I would do well at tennis, but I haven't had the time. The solitary stuff just works better for my schedule.

Yeah, I haven't been able to commit to a team sport for almost fifteen years. I worked on call in the film biz and after that I've been too nomadic. Luckily I'm not a huge team sports person.

When the winter isn't as shit tastic as this one, don't laugh, I skate. I can haul my aged ass into the air in a waltz jump still.

I see you in a whole new light, Netz.

I'm not a fantastic skater but I'm better than L. One of only three sports I can say I'm better at than him.

These days, my preferences run something like this.

Favorite.....

cold weather sport = cross-country skiing

indoor sport = racquetball

pickup sport = backyard football

water sport = kayaking

riding sport = biking

weapon sport = archery

Even though I've never seriously played it, I consider lacrosse to be the greatest sport ever invented. Catch at high speed! Outstanding.

I'm usually bored by sports that involve a lot of down time, and for this reason find golf deadly dull. I harbor great disgust for activities involving non-consenting participants - i.e., hunting purely for "sport" (not dinner) of any kind.

I would really like to try hang gliding. Anyone here with experience?

Lacrosse is actually our "official" national sport. It's quite popular here. Archery is where I learned I have hyper extended elbows...ouch. Next year I'll be getting into cross country, looking forward to that.

Funny, hubby is majorly into racquet sports, (he LOVES squash), except for racquetball. It's the only racquet sport he doesn't like. Hm.

Sorry, no experience with hang gliding.

Swimming and ballet are my faves. I run when I'm feeling guilty or haven't any other choice. I like things that let me zone out. Unless of course we're talking social sports, but I'm not sure if it counts as a sport when I can spend half the time with a beer in my hand.

I took ballet for several years as a kid. I was awful at it but it sure has helped me in all the other sports I do!

I run and swim. My husband plays volleyball and basketball. We've tried to play together, but it just doesn't work. :)

Yeah, sports with SO's can be tricky sometimes.

I grew up skiing every winter and in high-school was on the school team :)
My mom being good at tennis made us, sis and I, play tennis but I have a hard time with hand-eye coordination if it involves a ball :)rolleyes:), however I like it. It has been however way too long since the last time I did either ski or tennis.

Another sport I loved but was never too good (too short plus the same eye-ball coordination hindrance) is volleyball.

When I was a teen, I did windsurf a couple of summers. And from college up to before kids I did Aikido.

I forgot! As any Italian kid, I played soccer in the streets :D

ETA: I also forgot that I did roller-skate for about 8 years and can ice skate (and do the waltz step and a half-jump).

Wow, Rida, you're quite the athlete! I ski'd like a maniac up until I was in my mid-twenties. We had a school program, too, which was awesome - and affordable. I'd like to try snowboarding next year. Have you ever done it?

I played netball all the way up to my late teens, early twenties.

Netball is definitely good fun. Hell on the ankles and knees.. and also the joints on the hand if you play an attacking position because the defenders get a bit tangled up with you at times.

My friend, Moana, back in the Cook Islands, had to have major knee surgery because of a netball injury. She's forty and it still grieves her. I'd never heard of the sport before I went to live there.

In the past, I've done MMA.

L, out of the blue, just started taking Arnis. Go figure. He's never done any kind of formal martial arts in his life. I trained in Arnis for awhile (many moons ago) so, who knows, maybe I'll join up for fun? Nothing like beating on each other with sticks to get the romance going!

Badminton?

Badminton is an activity for prepubescent girls at a summer birthday party.

I played the big three, football, baseball, and basketball. And Flog or Golf spelled backwards. Some casual tennis.

Yeah, that's what I thought until L took me out to play "competitive" badminton one night. That's a whole other game. All I remember is the sound of the birdie whizzing past me...over and over and over. (Very humbling)

Lizzie - what is netball?

Try it again.... with the kidlet this time. It's never too early to get him hooked!

What does Mr. Man like?

No field hockey team? What did girls play in the fall?

Field hockey is a girls' thing in the States, though I've often suspected the goalies were male. Hard to tell under all those pads.

In any case, the rest of the team gets to wear cute flappy skirts. Well, at least they did back in the day.

We took him paddle boating and he loved it. He likes to steer while the rest of us do the work. Kidlet is actually pretty active these days in a few things, but I'm paranoid about posting details.

Mr. Man walks. He likes swimming and used to do martial arts. I wish he'd do more but I'm not allowed to nag. He does do a lot of manly work around the house, and I find it totally beyond hawt.

Word! Ping pong is kinda like that too.

My observation of squash players in New England is that they are the preppiest fucking people on earth. The type that spends non-court time in a pastel shirt, loafers, and lime green pants.

Racquetball can mess up your tennis game, because of the snap of the wrist. I love it because of the pace.

I played badminton at a neighborhood get-together once. Only once.

People kept getting pissed off and yelling, "Stop swinging so hard!" Not the kids, the freakin' adults! I spent the whole time thinking - jesus christ, don't put a racquet in my hand if you don't want me to actually use the damn thing!

I played the big three, football, baseball, and basketball.
Which positions?

Has anyone ever played walleyball (sp?)? I think that one isn't actually a beloved national sport anywhere, but it's wicked fun.

The only guy I knew who played squash regularly was a heavy set blue collar Italian sculptor - about as far from loafers as it gets.

Put a paddle in my hand and I'm only fit to swing at ass. I enjoy being the world's worst tennis player, but I am indeed that.

I can hit a softball respectably, go figure.

You're right to be cautious. Never mind about kidlet.

I run for about an hour every day - just for the release of energy, and to spend time outdoors. Mr. Man sounds like the kind of guy who could kick my ass... if he could catch me. ;) I've never had martial arts training.

Oh, non sport sports I love? I usually am the only person in a group bowling over 120. If I bowled with anyone good I'd look less competent, but it's insane fun.

Ha! It's tough for me to picture a squash player like that.

For tennis, you need hand/eye + agility. How quick are you on your feet?

My batting average always sucked. I just don't have the temperament for it.

I think it's actually kind of popular among the normal folk in the rust belt RI parts of the coast, but I could be imagining things.

I am not quick on my feet, but can be precise. My hand-eye is good, but batting is not the multitask that tennis is, in which case I'm hopeless. I have no idea what my average was, just that anxiety would diminish some when I got to the plate at the kids versus adults Memorial day game.

Stealing bases is the most fucking fun ever.

Well, I try my best with that.

I think he'd do well in a fight. Thankfully he's not hotheaded.

Hilarious. Yeah, L gets that when he tries to play a casual game of volleyball. That was his #1 sport for years. Highly competitive.

As for squash, wow, you growing a bunch of sissies out east or what? All the squash players I've ever seen, including L and company are bad-ass, full on athletes. Every time they play I think one of them is going to have a heart attack. So not the profile you describe AT ALL. Hm.

ETA: Maybe we just play every sport like we play hockey? (L says racquetball is too slow for him)

He said he had trouble with the wrist thing, from squash, when he first started tennis. I had trouble with control. I kept whacking the ball out of the park.
