He blinked. His vision flickered again. This was a poor idea. He didn't have enough strength to put this out, and once he was out of strength, the fire would consume him. Either the fire or his own shadows to prevent the fire from ravaging his body. Either way, though, he would be gone from this world. He felt the fire licking at his skin, and even the light tug of his own shadows on his clothing. His vision flickered again.
He had a vague thought of moving out of the fire and tried to stand, but realized with some amount of understanding that he had already used up his strength and couldn't even bring himself to stand, much less walk or even crawl. He heard his name, no, not his, Nocturne's name called out by one of the people standing nearby. He looked up towards where Blaze had gone off towards the other woman.
The fire cleared for but a moment and their eyes met, then the fire hid them from each other's view. He thought he saw alarm in her eyes, but the distance was too great for him to tell. She might have been in too great of a rage to care. No, she cared. He knew she did.
He was aware, in the back of his mind, that Blaze...no, not Blaze. She was Eva now. Eva was trying to get to him. She had an odd way of showing that she cared, using the woman's body to clear the flames to get to him. His vision blacked out and he pitched forward, his arms failing to hold him up an longer. The shadows put down their own tendrils to hold him up, shielding him from the fire even with his loss of self-control.
They released him into Eva's arms. It took a few moments after Eva took them back for him to be aware of much of anything. He came to in their apartment, on the bed with his head in Eva's lap. He coughed roughly into his hand, trying to clear the smoke from his lungs. He drew in a ragged breath and opened his eyes. He looked up at Eva and a smile touched his lips. He reached up to pull the mask off her face.
"I knew you couldn't resist," he said with a half laugh cut off by another rough cough.
