Nutjob Congressman Andy Ogles lost his Republican primary in Tennessee yesterday. He had Trump’s endorsement but still lost.

Tennessee is gerrymandered to the hilt, so the man who beat him (Charlie Hatcher) is likely to win the general election.

Ogles won’t be missed.
Ogles has faced various controversies over the years. He said this year that Muslims don’t belong in American society, deleted a homophobic social media post after having blamed a staffer and argued last year that the federal government should revoke future New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s citizenship and deport him.

He was also investigated on suspicion of campaign finance violations; he has not been charged with any crimes.

Even in a red state like Tennessee, Trump’s support can’t save a true wacko.

You imply that Trump is not a true wacko?
Beyond question he tops the diagnostic graphs for malignant narcissism. Poster boy for Dark Triad. And he took the Nobel certificate from the brave, abused woman who won it.
How many times can a non-wacko "win" the same war in 6 months?

On the other hand, the gerrymanderers may have overreached. The idea of gerrymandering is to rearrange the voters so that in as many as possible districts you have more than your opponent, say making all districts 51%-49% so you win all the districts, rather than just half of them. If your opponent has more voters than you, try to push as many of their voters into a single district as possible, leaving all the other districts with voters distributed in your favour.

This can backfire if there is a shift to your opponent larger than you expected. In that case, those districts that you thought you'd win with a small margin of victory, you would end up LOSING. But since you engineered so MANY districts to give you a slim edge, that slim edge could disappear and you'd end up losing many districts.

For example, if you thought you'd set things up so you had 51% to 49% in all the districts, but it turns out you have 49% to 51%, then instead of winning all, you'd lose all!

Yeah, you’re greatly underestimating the rampant racism in America that the corrupt, racist, fascist, right wing majority on the SCOTUS claimed no longer exists…

😑

If Democrats (especially black candidates) gain seats in congress in Tennessee after the ruling by the racist, fascist right wing majority on the SCOTUS, I will never cite racism as a major problem in America again. (Expect me to cite racism as a major problem in America again…).

😑

We. Told. Them. So.

What Hel_Brooks said is true, and we've seen it in other states, notably Virginia. It is, though, true we're not going to see it in Tennessee this year as it is just too red a state - for now.

Incidentally, the Dems did gain some ground in Tennessee this week.
  • In Knox County (Knoxville), they won a majority of the school board.
  • They won two county commission seats in Wilson County, which was Trump +40
  • The won control of the Montgomery County (Clarksville) commission.
  • They picked up three county commission seats in Washington County, a Republican stronghold since the Civil War.
It's a start, in a blood-red state.

I only said it was a possibility. A lot may depend on the price of petrol in November.

Tennessee is rated:
Crime #40
Education #31
Healthcare #39
Economic opportunity #39

Someone will have some work to do, if they are actually interested in sorting the place out.
