hair advice needed

I've always wanted to die my thick naturally blond highlights purple. Two thick chunks framing my face.

Some how I think the bosses will tell me that's not professional enough.

So that didnt go to plan. The red hasn't altered, but my roots are perfect *sigh*
So now do I try dark brown, black, black with blue hints or deep purple, or a golden brown containing lightener?

Hi Molly -
I know computer replicated pics aren't exactly known for reproducing skin tones, etc. with integrity, but I don't think you should go black/blue/purple. You look like you have very warm skin tones - I think you should go either with the golden brown or the dark brown. You could add both highlights AND lowlights - I think that would look good on you if you want to go multi-tone... But I always appreciate a more natural look.

Molly, I'm glad you didn't go that route. I have a friend who has long mega curly hair and she has it in a similar style and yes, it looks amazing, BUT it takes her over an hour every morning to get it looking good.

This is so timely!! I just had a review by peers who tell me, basically, that my hair is too sexy for my job... I have beautiful blond, naturally wavy hair to my waist. I DON'T want to cut it, but basically if I want to be taken seriously in this position I will have to cut it (just got mega promotion recently).
Very disappointed but hey - it's only hair, right? It's not like I can't grow it back, getting them used to it slowly... :)
For now your advise is perfect for me as well. Thanks SD!

I have waist length thick hair and almost never wear it down to work. The closest is wearing it in a tight, wrapped pony tail. I'd get some Ron Quattrro hairstix and just stick it up if you don't want to cut it.

I work at flippin McD's. But the coporate big wigs think that we should look like stock brokers or something. It's quite annoying, especially when it comes to clothes.

you're a burger flipper? really?

Well, I've been growing my hair out for several years now, and it's down to my butt.

I don't wear it down unless it's for a special occasion. I wear it up to protect it, so I've gotten used to fixing updo's.

It is rather unprofessional to wear extremely long hair down at work, especially if you work in an office. Sexy hair is great, I should know :D but it's best to follow dress code.

Lol, you didn't know?

I'm not exactly a burger flipper. We don't flip burgers.

But seriously, I'm an assistant manager, so I do work the floor, but most of my responcibilities involve office work.

I had no idea. and i suppose it shows that I have a stereotyped assumption about maccy D workers:eek:

Honestly, most people do. I have been told several times that I don't seem like the typical fast food flinger.

I know I'm overqualified and too intelligent for my job. However, it pays good, and right now that's all that really matters.

Okay, that just sounds like I'm full of myself.

a secure and steady job is not to be sniffed at in the current climate.

As dark as your hair is, you're going to have to bleach the parts you want to be blue or purple and then dye it the color you want if you want it to show up well. Unless I was sure my hair could handle the double-processing, I wouldn't go that route. :)

Yeah, I wouldn't bleach your hair. Especially not if you're trying to achieve something "tinted" rather than "pure tone" - that is, if you want a blue cast to hair, don't bleach it. If you want BLUE HAIR, then you bleach it.

And actually, I wouldn't bleach my hair either. As much as I would LOVE to have Manic Panic's Hot Hot Pink be my "signature" hair color, I'd never bleach it to get the right effect - too damaging.

I had a hair dye fandango recently and was able to strip the excess red tones by washing my hair with dawn dish soap. It will strip oils too though so be sure to follow it with a deep hot oil treatment or the like. I also learned that for fixing the color, you need to use a dye with a "base" that is opposite on the color wheel. For me the mahogany dye that made me purple ish red had a blue "base"...So I found the exact same mahogony color that I wanted with an orange "base" and it worked like a charm. I normally have a warm golden brown color naturally and I was told that I shouldn't use dyes that have "cool" colored bases because they just won't ever come out right.

As far as finding a color that is "right" for you, a beautician once told me to dig out baby pictures of yourself and that will give you the color you were designed to have and will always be the most flattering.

Hope that helps.

:)

That reminds me, some stores carry a product called Color Oops - we use it for spills of dye on surfaces, but it's made for hair!

This was my hair color when I was 18!(Well, it was Manic Panic, and it was hot pink although I can't recall if it glowed under a blacklight?) I think I bought the dye with a bleach kit when I was randomly in a Newbury Comics store. It was a fun color, but my hair became really dry and damaged.
