Have you ever sent fan mail to a published author?

Twice (not sure the second time counts). First time I was a kid and I wrote to the author of a series I really liked growing up. Never heard anything back. I just put down to “it got lost” and things like that. Later on, because I was curious about the author when I was in college, I looked him on the new thing that was just being rolled out at my university called “internet”. Discovered he was dead before I ever sent the letter (though not by much).

Second letter was to get the missing chapter of The Princess Bride. This was also during college. Got the form letter, which was funny. Lost it in a move.

Have you ever received a reply from an author?

Oh yeah. A couple of Asian-American Harlequin romance writers where I commented on a couple of their books, another historical romance writer on Facebook after we connected over books on Shanghai, and three or four Sci-Fi authors who mostly publish thru Baen Books. I chat with them all the time now, FB is great like that. Selena Kitt once or twice years ago - she was a very formative influence on my early writing and reading her books was a big influence on me getting started. Also a few authors I have done book reviews on Amazon for in the past. Now book reviewing is a GREAT way to connect. Everyone appreciates a good review and I only ever reviewed books I liked.
