Maddie drove through out the night until she reached the small town of Havenwood, NC, population 1200+. She was going to meet up with a realtor who told her about a great 2 bedroom home for rent. And right now, Maddie was desperate enough to take it without first inspecting it. She had just enough money saved up to pay for rent for a year. That should take care of her until it was time.

Even though she was dead tired, she was determined not to stop. She had to get far away as possible and after doing some research, Havenwood seemed like the perfect place to hide out until the time came. She needed to kept to herself and figure out what she was going to do.

At 2 months pregnant, Madeline Allen wasn't just any simple pregnant, unwed woman... She was the former girlfriend of Vincent Archuleta, up and coming leader of the mexican mob. Maddie had made sure to keep her pregnancy a secret until she could get out safely. She had gone to the cops but there was nothing they could do to guarantee her safety. And once Vince would find out about his child, Maddie knew he would stop at nothing to get at his child.

A gangster's life was something Maddie didn't want her child to grow up in. Besides, these past few weeks with Vincent proved to be a little too dangerous. He had become more short tempered with everything and usually would take it out on Maddie. God knew what would happen if Vince just happened to go off the deep end one day, because in her opinion, he was close, very close and now, news like this was sure to send him over the edge because of Maddie up and running away from him.

The house was silent; the only sound that was heard was the ceiling fan as it spun cool air down to Vic as he slept peacefully. He cherished these moments when he was able to sleep without fear, without having to keep one eye open. That’s why he loved Havenwood. Before he found this peaceful place, Victor Ramirez was the right hand of Vincent Archuleta. His word was law to Vic, Vincent said jump, he asked how high, he said kill a man, Vic would ask deep he want the knife in his throat. Vincent was cold, precise and was skilled beyond comprehension when it came to killing, he was perfect to Vincent. His targets would never know he hit them as he buried his butterfly knife in them. Yet as cold there were many kills that weighed on his conscious and one night in Puebla was when he said no more.

Vic left without a trace, to a place where no one could find him. Havenwood was perfect, the people were nice and best of all no one knew him. He bought a nice house in the suburbs, using his mother’s maiden name to keep a low profile and even got a job as a chef at a local restaurant. If there was one thing he was good at other than killing, it was cooking; a trait he learned from his mother. He never knew that his life could be so care free, for the first time he felt happy. No more killing and no more Vincent.

Vic woke up and stretched. He headed to the bathroom and looked over himself in the mirror. His short black hair shaggy from his sleep as he rubbed his dark brown eye. After using the restroom, he heard the running of his dog Eddie as he jumped onto Vic giving him a very good morning. He went outside to get the paper looking at the house next door as the “For Rent” sign was off the lawn. “New neighbors… exciting” he said calmly as he stood their in his pajama pants and white t-shirt.

Madeline got out of her rented car after pulling up to the address she was given. It was quite easy to find the place since the town was so small. She had after all grew up in a city of thousands and figured it would a chore finding her new home.

She looked at the set of keys given to her by the Realtor and headed up the drive way. With a self trained eye, Maddie looked around, inspecting her surroundings, hoping not to be so obvious.

The neighborhood was pretty quiet and that was something she was going to have to get used to. As she opened the door, there was a set of balloons and a sign "WELCOME". No doubt something put there by the lady at the office.

After Maddie inspected the rest of the house, which was sparsely furnished with the basics, she decided to get her things from the car. She hadn't brought much, just a suitcase and her purse.

Again, she took that moment to look around, as if expecting Vincent to pop out of no where and grab her, or at least one of his goons. But of course, nothing--thank goodness!

Victor was usually quite introverted. He didn't talk, not a lot at least. He would say a few hello's and hi's to people but never made much conversation with the people who lived in the town. It never stopped them though, anytime he was working or taking Eddie for a walk there would be someone to say hello to him and Vic would give a little wave or a nod and smile.

He watched at the woman got her things out of the car. He thought it was odd for her not to have much, but figured she might just be starting off. She was cute, long black hair, and eyes that were either green or hazel, he wasn't sure. He took a quick glance at he stomach and noticed a slight bump, she must have been pregnant. He didn't anyone with her, or even a ring; perhaps she was raising it alone.

Regardless, Vic figured if he was living here, he should at least show the hospitality that the other resident showed. He walked over to the woman giving a slight wave and a smile, "Hi..." he said nervous "I'm Victor, Vic for short. I live next door...." he felt like he should have said more but he was at a loss. He was more hoping the woman would have something to say.

With a small intake of breath, Maddie turned to see who had snuck up on her. Well, he didn't really sneak up, her mind was just preoccupied and she jumped. Whipping around, she had a hand on her chest and let a out a small nervous laugh, though her heart was racing.

"Oh, hello!" She said, extending her hand. In all aspects, Maddie really was a friendly, out going person. But here, she knew she'd have to be careful. At least until she was sure it was safe, "I'm, umm, Katie, it's nice to meet you Vic." She didn't realize she had almost stuttered at her 'fake' name. Right now, yes, she needed to blend in but she also needed to be extra careful with people.

"I'm sorry I.. I didn't mean to scare you" replied Vic as stepped back a bit feeling a bit embarrassed for scaring her. He was gentle when shook her hand, it was soft feminine of course as it almost made his heart swell if not for a moment. "It's nice to meet you Katie. Like I said I live next and... I just wanted to welcome you." It was amazing Victor had killed many people without batting an eye, yet talking to this one woman seemed like a bigger challenge. "If you need any help with anything, I'd be happy to help".

"Oh, well, I don't really have much but thank you for the offer and also for the welcome. At least I don't have to feel like a total stranger." She set her suitcase down and that's when she saw the dog charging toward them.

Maddie didn't panic of course as the dog's tail was wagging happily as he came to sudden halt beside Victor.

"Oh, what a cute dog," she said and bent down to pet it. She had always loved animals but Vincent didn't want any around him so she never got the opportunity to get one.

Scratching the dog behind his ear, Maddie looked up at Victor, "What's his name?"

Victor had completely forgotten he left his door partly opened. Eddie was never the calmest, just about anywhere he went Eddie would follow. He took quite a liking to Maddie, easing into her petting as he wagged his tail. "This is Eddie" replied Vic as he bent down as well. "He must have have pushed the door open to get out. I guess he just had to meet you."

There no denying that Eddie liked Maddie a lot, they say that dogs tend to have a sort of link with their owner, able to feel what they feel. As of now that seemed to be very true. "So what brings you to Havenwood, Katie?"
