Hey Brits, a question about royal protocol?

Help a yank out here...
I know one is not supposed to touch Her Majesty The Queen under any circumstances...I am old enough to remember when President Gerald Ford got pilloried for touching Queen Elizabeth on her back during a Royal visit here in 1975.

Does that courtesy extend to other members of the Royal family as well?

I just saw the video of Prince Charles shaking hands with foreign dignitaries at DAVOS last evening. He deliberately snubbed Vice President Pence, declining to shake his hand. Pence then reached out and grabbed Prince Charles' coat sleeve as he passed. HRH ignored him and moved on.

Would this be considered a diplomatic faux pas? (or "fox paws" as Ishmael used to say)?

Yes. Prince Charles ignoring Vice-President Pence was a deliberate message, probably about the US's attitude on Climate change.

Grabbing Charles' coat is probably a breach of protocol but the senior royals tend to be relaxed about inadvertent breaches. They are more concerned about making people feel comfortable in their presence - courtesy overrides protocol.

he grabbed his sleeve?

aloof snub=british
sleeve-grabber=american

i need to see that

I considerate it as an act of desperation by Pence ,he knew the snub would be broadcast world wide and make him a bigger laughing stock .
You have to hand it to Royals ,Anne and Charles have shown their disapproval of the heads of the current administration .

British royal protocols only hold for the Brits as far as I'm concerned. There are international protocols to use for any head of state. That's what Queen Elizabeth is to the rest of the world--one of a bunch of heads of states (although one of the better ones, to be sure). As for the rest of the royal family, any protocol other than the basic ones of human decency is just for the Brits to worry about among themselves. I'd give an elected vice president more position respect than a presumptive inherit-by-birth heir, no matter what the position in the presumptive list. That said, snubs that reflect country policy are fine by anyone, as far as I'm concerned. Charles can feel free to kick Mike Pence down the stairs.

There are only 2 real royals...and the British people just snubbed them. Why Dribble do you feel that way? Who fucking buys those ass-wipes tabloids you call "news"? They were just catering to what sells. If you had a backbone, you would have stopped buying them, and you would still have royalty worthy of respect. Cold? Yes. I know, I dont have much room to laugh...I have Donald Duck, traitor, as a president. And no....Americans have no moral backbone either.

I'd have been much more impressed with Pence if instead of grabbing the suckling's sleeve, he would have tripped him.

It'd been more fun if the Bobbies had tackled Mikey.

Caught it on the Guardian website ,the look on Pence's face is priceless .

It depends, protocol is that if touching a member of the royal family it is prefered to only do so above the waist. Also avoid phrases such as 'cor blimmey yer maj, ya dont get many o them to the pound, gawd bless ya ma'am.

If that cannot be avoided, follow up swiftly with a cry of 'alms for a blind man, alms for a blind man'

There has to be a Prince Andrew joke in there somewhere.

How about that jolly old royal protocol which violently slayed and subdued native Americans, and forcibly imposed upon their continent, and then institutionalized within it, inhumane African slavery?

Grabbing anyone by the arm to try to force unwanted contact is more than a faux pas. Nobody likes being snubbed, but the dude is clearly an entitled arsehole.

Yep we started it, then as with most things you guys picked it up and ran with it. However, that had little to do with the Monarchy, they don't get involved in anything hands-on.

Most of the problems you refer to were the realm of the East India company and its equivalent in North America. We knew how to privatise in those days. The company ran whole countries and was provided with protection by the Royal Navy and British Army on a mercenary basis. The men who ran it became very rich and of course paid large amounts to the government for the right to exploit the countries of the empire. It was also a way for the British Government to distance itself from the excesses of the armies in foreign lands.

Who cares?

We stopped showing any deference to the crown July 4, 1776.

Most of the outrage about so called breaches of protocol with respect to the Royals are made "on their behalf" by ass kissing courtiers and trash media rather than the Royals themselves. Queen and co are pretty relaxed about it.

It's worth remembering that Queen Liz has probably met personally more mass murderers, thieves, liars, and neer do wells than anyone on the planet. Presidents- Prime Ministers- Saudi Princelings etc. :)

Arent you that panty smelling meth adict everyone is always talking about?

Aren't you RobDownSouth doing your "Skiddles" act that everyone with an IQ over 85 easily recognizes, (whether or not they choose to admit it?)

You limey authoritarians didn't just start it, you violently and forcibly institutionalized and enforced it. And when Americans finally went to war with each other over the despicable state of slavery Great Britain infected them with, your beloved limeyland supported the slave owning side.

However, that had little to do with the Monarchy.

I agree, if "that had little to do with the Monarchy" means at the direct behest of the King.

Fuck off with your monarchical denialism.

...jimmy savile (knighthood from the queen and a second from the pope), rolf harris (MBE, OBE, CBE)... yeah, she has had to mingle with all the best people

Hmm' small time players. The Pope could have given Saville and Harris tips based on his knowledge.

I was thinking more of Ceausescu, King Saud, Hirohito, V Putin, Robert Mugabe, Shah of Iran, Mobuto Seko etc.

When a dog barked at Putin in her Maj's presence, she told Vlad, "Dogs usually have such good instincts." I suspect that Putin would have thought it a compliment. :)

unfortunately not small-time enough for their victims.

i do take your point, though; i'd NEVER want to have her job. she's lived diplomacy all her crowned days and must be so tired of it all. as monarch, she could probably never had acted on personal feelings regarding america or pence; her son has more freedom in that regard.

i'm no royalist but i appreciate the difficult job she has; it might not be working underground in a mine, but having to act the part whenever in public, working her socks off and having every move by her family under public scrutiny is no piece of cake. she may have stupid wealth, but that will never give her back the time and freedoms she's lost as queen.
