And this picture - for all you lurkers - is 4 miles up the mountain on old US 60 from Gauley Bridge.

Gauley Bridge you ask? Only the cultural center of the universe you flatlanders!

Oh, and an historical footnote about the previous picture: The river shown is the "New" River, very possibly the most ancient river in the world. Only two other rivers come close in age, the Nile in Africa and the Yellow (or Yangzee) in China.

AND, while this stretch is behind a hydo-electric dam (which is where John Henry had his famous race against the steam driven hammer) most of this river's course is rocky and swift... incredible smallmouth bass and channel catfish fishing.

Hey, they haven't been having "Bridge Day" for the past couple of years because of the fear of terrorism... over reaction I think. Its really nice to walk out and look up and down the gorge.

Oh, I spent two summers working for Mountain River Tours guiding rafts from Thurmond to Hawk Nest. (And on the Gauley River from Summersville Dam to Peter's Creek.)

cool....i have only been rafting once, but it was a blast

i live in Kanawha Valley and if you think the bridge thing is over reacting, you should have seen the panic in the chemical valley after the terrorism stuff started

Yes dear, you're right dear, absolutely dear. I guess the Nile is the only other major river?

And it cuts across the Appalachian mountains twice, and our mountains are very likely the oldest mountain chain on dry earth.
