Hijo De La Luna....

An ex's Mother, when I lived with them for a year, barely spoke to me in English. She felt it was her duty to teach me Spanish. To this day, I am confidant that if any Spanish speaking person is swearing at me I sure as hell know how to swear back ;) and that what sounds like yelling, screaming and bitching is generally just latin love being spread rather boisterously around.

I used to speak Gibraltar Dockyard Worker's Spanish. That can get me lynched in Madrid if not arrested for obscenity and blasphemy.

I speak Australian French with an 18th century vocabulary. I get very odd looks if not hysterics when I use it in Calais.

I am hoping to learn 'proper' (= Castilian) Spanish at evening classes from September.

I have tourist level Serbo-Croat and Italian. I can usually understand Dutch in my shop.

My wife speaks Parisian French that she learned while acting as an au pair for a retired Sorbonne Professor. She also speaks German and some Italian.

My daughters:

No. 1 - French, German, Northern Italian, Mexican Spanish, Cantonese and studied Latin and Classic Greek. Can make herself understood in basic Thai, Japanese, and Malay.

No. 2 - French and German, some Polish, Hungarian.

No. 3 - French, German, and is studying Brazilian Portuguese.

If that isn't enough the family has friends who can help in most major world languages including some sub-saharan languages.

That's pretty impressive Og.

It never ceases to amaze me that people from just about everywhere else in the world speak at least two languages - the second at least passably, while here in the US, there are people who bitch because there's more than one language printed on instruction sheets, etc.

"Damn illegal aliens! Damn them for making me feel inferior to all of the rest of the world!"

When I was in high school, it was required to take a language: French, Spanish, whatever. Spanish was my first choice because if you grow up in California, you at least understand some of it anyway.

Danish I worked on because of a boyfriend. What we'll do for love, eh?

No sub-Saharan languages here, but I speak - in addiction to Portuguese  - English, French, (Castilian) Spanish, Galician; can make myself understood in Italian, basic Finnish, institutional Arabian, Japanese; can understand most Catalan.

My brother can speak English, German, (Castilian) Spanish, Galician, Dutch, French, Italian, some basic Serbo-Croat.

Both my mother and father have some understanding of a couple of Austral-African dialects.

What impresses me most about your languages is your command of written English. If I didn't know, I would assume that it is your native language.

Going back to lurking.

:D

A measly two languages and some half baked ones.

But like Lauren, you express yourself beautifully in English.

My written French might be understood by Robespierre but not by a modern French person.
