Andara was enraged by everything that had happened in the last few hours. This stupid human had wandered in, not even realizing he was standing on a sacred symbol of her people. He had so little respect for the Fynan elves that he'd refused to apologize when she confronted him about it later. This man was a son of a bitch.

Now, she stood across from him, panting. The match had gone on much longer than she'd thought it would....he looked so slow and bulky compared to any elf. She stood panting in her usual outfit for battle: a leather top that stopped right below her breasts, revealing her narrow waist and toned abs, and a pair of tight leather pants that rode somewhat low on her hips. Although most elves tended to stay thin and toned, Andara was impressively fit even for someone with more combat experience. At the age of nineteen, she'd only seen combat once, but had been training for it since she was a child.

She wore her usual boots and her hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and she stood about as high as the human's chest, looking up at him with loathing.

With another war cry, she rushed in, swinging her sword only to have it deflected once again.

"If you only would've apologized, I would've let you go, fucking human. But, now, you're going to have to..."

She feinted, then moved in with a rush. Somehow, though, he dodged out of the way and smashed his hilt against her knuckles. She dropped the sword with a gasp only to find him behind her, his arm wrapped around her, the blade of his sword against her throat.

"...die," she finished, then closed her eyes, knowing that after the arrogance she just expressed, he would probably cut her throat before she took her next breath.

Tobin RimeHart spent most of his time traveling. Sometimes he worked as a guard for a caravan, there were times he'd signed onto military units for specific campaigns. He was a true mercenary, a man willing to sell his time to anyone for the right price and a man who didn't let himself be bound to anyone or anything.

Tobin stood at about an inch over six feet. He didn't believe in full plate style armor as he felt it slowed him down too much, so instead he wore a breast plate and hardened leather. He kept his black hair short and stubble covered his face partially obscuring the small scar just below his right cheek. His body was well muscled beneath the armor, a body built for war, and he seemed to dwarf the elves he found himself among in size if not always height.

The man had heard many stories about the elven lands, but this was the first time his travels had taken him here. He'd left the merchant he'd been guarding on his way here and now he stood at the center of the strange town in the forest trying to decide where he'd find his next job.

It was then that some Elf brat came up to him demanding apologies. Tobin had no patient for local superstitions, even Elf ones, and he brushed the girl off, starting to head away spying what could be a tavern, but what happened next surprised him. The spry girl pulled a blade on him and demanded a duel to the death. His next fight had come to him.

She was one of the fastest opponents he'd ever come up against. Tobin couldn't help, but admire her Elvin technique, not to mention her toned body, but it was obvious she'd never seen real combat. She moved like this was a drill or a sparring match. Her sheer speed with the blade was still enough for her, but years of experience on the battlefield had taught him patience with one like this. He feared she would wear him down before he had his chance, but then she made a small mistake and Tobin took his opening. He disarmed her, and soon had his blade against her throat.

A crowd had gathered while they fought and a hush fell over them as they waited to see what the savage outsider would do. “You think I'm ignorant of your ways, but I know enough to know defeating this girl like this earns me her life. From now on this Elf belongs to me!” No one answered him, but they had accepted his claim and the crowd slowly dispersed.

The man still held her though, not trusting the pointy eared girl to not run. “My name is Tobin RimeHart, Elf, and I am your master now. I'm going to let you go now, but if you make me run you down you will regret it.” The cool metal left her throat and his arms left her warm body, but he stayed tense ready to keep the prize he'd just stumbled upon.

“My name is Tobin RimeHart, Elf, and I am your master now. I'm going to let you go now, but if you make me run you down you will regret it.”

The blade of his sword was lifted from her throat and his arm slid away from her waist. She'd been a little too preoccupied by the sword at her throat to notice his calloused hand on her stomach, but now she felt even more humiliated that this foreign man had touched her bare skin in front of all these people. The people of her tribe were isolated from other races most of the time and liked it that way: physical contact with other races--anything more than a polite handshake--was the greatest of taboos, regardless of whether it had been her choice or not.

Looking up at the tall human, she knew he could still see her hatred, the light green of her cheeks blushing to an even lighter color as she lowered herself to her knees, knowing that the human was right.

Bowing her head and placing her wrists together above her head--a longstanding tradition, in case her new master chose to bind her wrists--she said, "I will not try to run away. I will honor the traditions of my people. Thank you for sparing my life...I can only repay you by placing my life in your hands now and, if I'm worthy, giving my life to save yours someday."

She stared at the man's boots as she spoke, the words coming out of her mouth tasting as bitter as any wine she'd ever tasted, knowing that this human would have no respect for her, just as he had no respect for her people.

Tobin had been seeking direction and now he had it. There was a thriving city on the north side of this forest he'd been to before, they traded slaves. He'd have his fun with this elf girl and sell her off. Elf slaves were rare and he'd make a bundle off the whole thing, not to mention the fun he'd have with her on the long trip there.

“We're going back to my camp, its just outside your town,” Tobin informed the girl. He'd felt her body during the combat, but he was eager to do more in a private setting. “While we walk tell me about yourself. I want to be sure I didn't make a mistake sparing you.” He began walking and expected her to follow. He'd taunted her and hoped it would be enough to learn a little more about what she was capable of doing. Elves were a mystery to him, but he knew nothing about this one.

“While we walk tell me about yourself. I want to be sure I didn't make a mistake sparing you.”

As he said this, she began to wonder. Did he make a mistake? Did she deserve to live?

For the last four years, she'd lived without more than a passing thought of her family. But, she didn't know how she could've done things differently. After all, she'd been promised to one of the town elders as soon as her body began developing, and had developed a strong distrust for him almost immediately. Every year from the age of twelve, she'd spent a week as his servant, allowing the two of them to get to know one another before she was to be married to him on her fifteenth birthday. She couldn't stand the way he looked at her, the way he spoke to her, like she was nothing but a piece of property.

She almost smirked, thinking of the irony.

She ran away a few days before her fifteenth birthday, living as a thief for a while, then as a bodyguard for the last two years. Just last night, she'd been dismissed by her employer, and before this duel happened she'd had no plan of where she would go from here.

Ironically, this was no longer a problem.

Pushing a few strands of hair back, she said, "I'm a bodyguard. That's pretty much all there is to know about me. I don't have a family, so nobody's going to miss me."

She said this before getting her self-pity in check, but was surprised to see the look this human gave her after her comment: it was without any pity; he smirked coldly back at her as he continued to walk.

Trailing along behind, she watched as they passed quickly by the Elvin homes and shops, walking swiftly toward the border of the town. With a sigh, she followed obediently.

The girl took a while before she answered him and he let her. She needed to get used to being his and he was going to make her work to make herself worth it to him, and if a little thinking helped her do that Tobin didn't mind. He couldn't help, but smile at her few comments.

“I hope you're selling yourself short,” he told her, “you'll have until my next destination to prove you're worth it to me or you won't be my problem anymore.” He'd probably just sell her, but the gruff man didn't mind letting her think he'd kill her. He wanted something to motivate her or he might end up fighting her over every little thing.

Soon they approached the clearing where Tobin had made camp. The clearing itself was partially hidden by brush and down branches he'd moved into the way to keep someone from stumbling onto it by accident. Wood was already stacked, ready to be lit in a ring of stones, his tent was set up although he only had one pad and sleeping bag. Fishing out flint and steel, and adding some tinder to the pile of wood, Tobin coaxed the beginnings of a fire into the ring. Then he emptied a skin of water into a pot he pulled from his pack and hung it from a tripod over the growing fire. Done for the moment with his work Tobin sat down on a large flat rock near the fire.

“You have potential in a fight, but there is a lot I will need to teach you. I'm still not totally convinced its worth it though elf. I ask you to tell me about yourself and I don't even get your name. You tell me your a body guard, but from what I've seen I'll need to put in some real work to make you good at that. Can you hunt? Cook? Tell me how I can use you?” Tobin normally wouldn't have been so rude, but he found himself slipping happily into the role of a demanding master.

Can you hunt? Cook? Tell me how I can use you?

Andara blushed at these harsh words, bowing her head slightly as she walked along behind him. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice much less angry and more concerned than before. "I'm Andara, from Emberwood, a village far to the East of here. Not as far as you come from, I'd imagine." Crouching by the fire, she quickly began making herself useful by adding some slightly smaller twigs to the growing flame, coaxing it to life a bit more. She didn't want to seem useless. That would most likely be fatal.

"I spent years on my own in the woods, and you can't do that without a variety of skills. I can hunt, I can shoot an arrow, I can fish, gut a fish, skin a kill, and I know how to keep insects away. I also spent some time traveling with thieves for a while before I fell into soldiering. From my time doing that, I'm pretty useful with a set of lockpicks, and I can set up traps really well. I also became quite a contortionist while I was studying to be a rogue."

She stared over the campfire into his eyes, trying to see if anything she'd said had impressed him--impressed him enough to want to feed her and not just cut her throat. His expression was blank. She swallowed nervously, and kept talking.

"I can track animals, beasts, elves and men through the woods. I can keep still without making a sound for more than a day, waiting for prey to come by..." She knew she was starting to repeat herself now. Prattling on like this was just as likely to anger him as it was to make him want to keep her alive.

"And, I'm willing to learn anything. I'm a very hard worker, that I can promise you. You may not be that impressed by what I can do with a sword, but I'm much better with a bow, and you have my word that I'll put myself in the way of anyone who threatens you."

She stared across the fire as the sky darkened, cicadas in the trees chanting loudly, as she stared into his eyes, pleadingly. "And I don't eat much. Please, I'll make it worth it for you."

Tobin listened stoically while she listed off her skills. Certain things peaked his interest, but he didn't let them show. Contortionist. Lockpicks. Willing to learn anything. The gruff man got up and went to a tree at the edge of the clearing. Unknotting a rope there he lowered a canvas bag out of the tree onto the ground. After fishing out the rabbit meat he'd wrapped in an edible moss this morning and a few root vegetables, he went to the pot and slid them into the already steaming water. Then he raised the food bag back into the tree and sat back down.

Tobin nodded as if coming to a conclusion about her and then patted the ground next to him. “Sit next to me,” he told her and he waited for her to comply before continuing, “You'll do the hunting when we need more food. I'll give you fair portions of our meals and if you want more you will ask permission. In the morning you'll gather what you think you need to serve me of your things from the village before we set off. You have a lot of proving yourself to do, but I think you might prove worth it.”

Tobin put his hand on her bare arm for a moment before getting up to stir the soup. “Now that I know what skills you have I want to know about your personal life. Andara, If you're going to be my slave I'm not going to let you keep anything from me. You're still fairly young, have you had many lovers or are you a virgin? Do you pleasure yourself at night when you think no one can hear? Do you have any fantasies about a special man ... or woman?” They were very invasive questions, but Tobin wanted to see how far he could carry the life debt she owed him. He stared down at her with a hard look on his face to tell her he'd see if she lied to him.

"Sit next to me," he said, patting the ground beside him.

Andara stood and walked over, sitting down in the dirt, her legs criss-crossed beneath her as she looked at the flames, knowing that his eyes were on her and not wanting to meet them. Not wanting him to think she was going to challenge his control; if he thought that, she wasn't likely to survive the night.

“You'll do the hunting when we need more food," he said. "I'll give you fair portions of our meals and if you want more you will ask permission. In the morning you'll gather what you think you need to serve me of your things from the village before we set off. You have a lot of proving yourself to do, but I think you might prove worth it.”

Andara almost jumped when his pale, human hand gripped her arm gently. She thought that the touch would make her skin crawl, but it didn't feel any different from any Elvin hand. There was nothing uncomfortable about it once the strangeness had worn off.

“You're still fairly young, have you had many lovers or are you a virgin? Do you pleasure yourself at night when you think no one can hear? Do you have any fantasies about a special man ... or woman?”

Andara felt her face paling at the impolite questions, and quickly decided not to answer them. But, it only took her a moment to remember that she'd given herself over to him as his slave: obeying him was likely to go beyond physical work. She would also have to be honest...to open up herself to him. To tell him, truthfully, about her past.

Brushing her hair back, Andara looked down at her boots as she spoke. "The man I was promised to marry demanded many sexual favors from me. I...I helped him masturbate, with my hands and my feet. I sucked his cock as well. And, I danced naked for him many times, almost every time I saw him. But, he upheld the code of my village, and didn't fuck me.

"After I left the village, I never gave up my virginity, although I sucked off many men. Sometimes at night, I do think about making love to a man....but, the man doesn't have a face. I've never been in love, and I don't know that I ever will be."

She could feel his hard stare as she sat there, his fingers holding her arm firmly, his thumb gently brushing across her skin as he listened to her speak. Blushing again, she finally looked over to him, meeting his eyes, her lips parted as she felt her heart speeding up.

What was he thinking? Was he going to kill her? Sell her? She almost felt like she was going to cry.

Again Tabin got up, this time fetching two bowls and spoons from his pack. Pouring some of the soup into each bowl. He sat back down and handed one of the wooden bowls to Andara. Steam drifted off the simple soup and as the gruff man took a few spoon fulls letting it warm him.

“I thought for certain you'd be some bashful elf maiden. You must have hated doing all of that for a dirty old man. Still you must like wrapping your lips around a man's meat to keep doing it. I'm glad you know to be honest with your master, but from now on, before any sexual contact even just with yourself, you are to ask my permission.”

Tabin continued eating his soup and let his captive absorb a little more of just how much he intended to control her. Perhaps by the time they reached the slave market he would change his mind. Perhaps he'd have her so wrapped around his finger she wouldn't be free if given the choice. Still, for the time being he'd only push her a little at a time. Finishing off his soup Tabin sighed.

“I want to get an early start in the morning. Anything else to offer before I go to sleep, my eager little slave?”
