On the other hand, in my younger days I was known to break just about all the rules. For example:

Now, the shirt isn't bad on its own, but the plaid doesn't exactly go with the striped shorts. Also, there is a bit of a discontinuity between the long sleeved shirt and the shorts. That aside, we move down a bit to notice the black loafers which, again, wouldn't be so bad except for the red socks. In all, it is a rather shocking mix.

So, I know, first hand, that these things can be cumulative. It is a slippery slope that begins with socks.
