Alice stood nude, in front of the mirror in the small dingy hotel room mirror. She tousled her short red hair, and surveyed her body in the pale light of the bulb in the room. At thirty three, she saw that time and the hard work from the ranch had began to show. Though her breasts were still perky, she knew she saw a bit of sag in them and the time spent riding a horse had widened her stance from what was once a rodeo queen’s gait.

At least the hard work had enabled her to maintain her body. She was lean and muscular; the many days helping her husband move hay, chop wood, and much stalls had kept her fit. She sighed though, looking at her face; which seemed to be aging far before her time; a casualty of the howling Colorado winds and the bright sun. She reached for her bra; binding her breasts with in the cups and then pulling on her blue denim work shirt.
As she finished dressing, she looked out the window towards the train station across the street. It had been costly driving the old ford truck the thirty miles into town; but it was better than getting up at three o’clock to make the trip; she had been able to fill the bed with the supplies she needed when she had arrived last night and hoped that she could be back on the road as soon as her last pick up was completed.
Donning a coat, she started down the stairs into the lobby of the hotel. Paul, the manager, still wasn’t awake, but she carefully counted out the lodging money and left it on the counter. Turning she lit a Lucky Strike with a wooden match and pulling her hat on her head stepped into the street and crossed to the train station.
Standing on the train station, Alice heard the shrill whistle of the approaching locomotive. The wind blew steadily form the north, bringing a chill into the dreary mid October morning. She was leeward of the wind, but still felt a small nip and tightened her coat closer to her lean body. Glancing up at the clock, she saw that it read 6:35; about 10 minutes late.
She had been trying to operate the ranch alone since her husband had rejoined his beloved Marine Corps almost a year before. She had last heard from him almost a month before; from a Pacific island called Guadalcanal. Everyday, she dreaded the sheriffs’ car coming along the long dusty road to their home; but fortunately it had not happened.
The past year had been hard. Far from destitute, the work that the two of them shared, had wholly become her responsibility. As a transplant, a Texas girl located now in Colorado, she had had a hard time fitting in with the crowd. Her requests for help had been largely ignored and she had finally found herself advertising for a hired hand.
Billy Martin had written her; a cowboy from West Texas. She had hired him on the spot; as it was accompanied by a letter of recommendation from her Uncle, who owned a larger spread near Fort Stockton. He had claimed to had been employed by her uncle for the last year; and had been recommended. She had wired him an advance for the train fare and now here she was on this cold October morning.
The train blew into the station; pushing cold air up and under her jacket. She momentarily wished that she had brought her long underwear; but knew that later in the day it would warm up enough that she wouldn’t need them. She stepped forward as the train came to a stop; the hiss of compressed air releasing amplified by the confined space.
The conductor jumped from the steps he was standing on and looked up expectantly to the passenger coach. Alice was surprised to see that there were several people debarking, and she stood against the wall of the station and watched. As she stood she realized her heart was pounding in her chest; a quick thought of a man around the ranch again. Two men in suits stepped past the conductor and without even glancing at her entered the small depot.
The conductor began to move back up the steps and she heard the train preparing to move on. Had her new hand missed the train? She felt her anger begin to rise; her having to have driven all this way for. The train had slowly began to move, when she heard a mans voice from above tell the conductor, “Excuse me, this is my stop.” She looked up at her new hired hand, squeezing past the conductor and jumping from the slowly moving train directly in front of her.
