She gave his had a squeeze back, "God wants you to be happy. Just like anyone else." He asked her to stay with him a while longer. Her heart beat madly. "I'll be glad to stay with you for a bit. We've got awhile yet. No one starts stirring at the house before four." She reluctantly let go of his hand and gathered her reins back up. "Let's not keep you from your work though. Lead the way."
As Cyrus set out ahead of her, she took a moment to hastily wipe the tears from her face and recompose herself. He had such a horrible tale. She couldn't blame him for feeling the way he did. She also realized she would probably never stand a chance with him either. Still he would be a good friend to her. She recognized that much.
Catching up with him, she let Cally ride easily beside Donovan. "You asked about me, but I am afraid there is not much to know. You've seen my home. You've met or at least seen most of my family. This is all I have ever really known. And soon I'll get married and become a little wife." She stared down at her hands when she finished the statement feeling like the fire had gone out of her. She would soon be someone's wife and she would probably have some say in the matter but not much. Beth always wanted more, like in the books she read, but since the war, she began to realize she couldn't fight the life that had been molded for her. She fell into a silence as they rode.
