I know i have to hit one of the function keys when windows is starting, but which one?

Start the computer and immediately start pressing the F8 key, once per second, till a selection screen loads. When it loads, then use the up/down arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" from the list. Press the "Enter" key.

Good Luck..

Thank you. If you have any other ways to remove unwanted programs from my hard drive please let me know.

Aside from going into the Programs>Accessories>Add/Remove programs?

That's about the only way I know.

Anything in particular you're having probs with?

Pop-ups & spyware. I have adaware and sbypot removal programs but they aren't doing the trick.

I have some program called dealhelper which has no uninstall log so I can't remove it. Quite annoying.

Okay, do a search for dealhelper files and remove it that way?

I'll give that another shot. Tried it before, but it uninstall it I have to re-install it, and there was still no uninstall program.

Tricky bastards.

Try Hijack This..it can be found here:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

Run the scan which only takes a few seconds, your start menu items will also show up on the scan log so becareful what you actually delete. Though it does have a helpful button to find info on each selection.

Anything with BOH (Browser Opener Helper) in the name is ok to delete..these are things that open other unwanted websites as well as pop ups and completely drag down your computer.

I had a problem this past week with something called enhancemysearch.com and after trying a dozen utilities this was the only thing that got rid of it.

Again good luck..

There are two other ways to get to the boot menu with Safe Mode on it.

Reboot the computer and hold down the control key until the menu appears.

Go to Start-> Run and type MSCONFIG; check "show boot menu" and exit. The Boot Menuwill show everytime you reboot your computer until you go back and change the setting.

If you're runing AVG Free (anti-virus) from Grisoft.com, then you can use the emergency boot disk it can create to remove files it can't remove from within windows.

If you're at all familiar with MSDOS and know the filenames and locations you need to delete, A Windows Emergency Boot disk will let you boot to the floppy disk and use MSDOS to correct the problems.

A program like RegClean or Norton's Registry Editor are useful for cleaning up the registry to keep programs from loading so you can use Windows Explorer to find and delete the files without worrying about them being "in use."

Windows built-in RegEdit can be used as well but it's much easier to screw things up by mistake than it is with a good third party registry editor.

Please be careful using Hijack This

They are BHO, Browser Helper Objects, and not all are bad.
They are only one af many things listed there that can be screwing up your system.
Although Hijack This WILL find all the bad stuff left in your system, it sould be the LAST thing you run. And you should NOT use it to delete things without knowing which ones and why you are deleting them. This is just as dangerous as editing the registry if you do not know what you are doing.

You can go here and READ all the links to learn how various things work, and how to identify and remove various objects.
It's not for beginners.

registry Editor

If you know the name of the program then try removing all registry entries for it.

CLICK START RUN type in 'regedit' and press enter

A Window structure will appear similar to a typical file explorer.

Select My Computer at the top of the tree then select EDIT, FIND typing in the name of the program you are looking for.

The window will display results on the right hand side.
If this matches EXACTLY the program name you want rid of, then delete it fromthe right hand window.
Press F3 to resume search until a message is displayed that you have reached the end of the file.

This will remove any computer records of this program.
It does not remove the program. This will have to be done by finding the actual file through the computer search and deleting it there.

All this is best done in safe mode.
