How does Story ranking work?

So I just got a story published in here and I've been watching the stars change as the day has gone on, but I have no idea how it works.

Like, it started out of 4, now it's x/31. How do you get a 31 when it's out of five stars?

If I understand what you’re saying, x is the average score from 31 votes.

There are people in the Authors’ Hangout who can explain it better.

the score was showing as 4.41 when i checked a moment ago.

and yes, the scores in your profile are displayed as score/ number of votes. for example the first story of mine in my profile has a score of 4.6/268. hope that helps.
