Yeah and precluding it hasn't really done jack for our divorce rate (ya know, sanctity of marriage and all that).

ETA: on a barely related note...I was reading a description of a very long, involved gay wedding ceremony that just took place and it kinda made me chuckle because, well, it was just a wee bit bridezilla. I mean, hey, I love me some butchy lesbians but I don't really want to watch them do a weirdly choreographed dance anymore than I want to watch Jack and Jill Hetero do it. Or hold hands and talk about how I will pledge to support your union. Please, where is my free booze already?

We ran to a JOP and involved 2 other people and got it over with.

I'm anti-weddings, straight or otherwise.

Political polygot. Mostly small-l libertarian, so I can't really answer the poll because I consider myself a classical liberal, whereas I regard modern day Liberalism/Progressivism to be a fairly conservative movement outside of a few issues.

So- pro-choice, pro-gay-marriage, pro-gun, pro-death penalty (under strictly monitored circumstances), anti-drug-prohibition, fiscally conservative as all fuck.

My view on government interference in our lives is that the government is a giant, insensate beast possessed of no honor, no ethic, and a powerful desire to grow ever larger and interfere as much as it can. Therefore government intrusion should be recognized as a necessary evil, with the emphasis on 'evil' and kept whenever possible to a minimum.

Very much a states rights proponent in the sense that as much governance as possible should be kept local. I couldn't do much of anything toward any presidential election, but if I was of a mind to I could probably throw some serious monkeywrenches in the election of state reps or city councilmen. Furthermore, the convergence of federal power means that during those periods when one party has a monopoly on power things can really get fucked up. Dividing the power among fifty states means that when one fucks up, it doesn't have to drag the other forty-nine with it. (California, I'm looking at you.)

Politicians are snake oil salesmen and should be viewed with disdain and distrust, instead of being lauded as saviors. I tend to agree with PJ O'Rourke's take that we'd do a better job filling congress with a few hundred random names from the phone book.

What it all adds up to these days is that I'm essentially a political conscientious objector. I don't much believe in the system anymore, and I certainly don't trust any of the salesmen.

Interesting...all you libertarian death-penalty folks.

I'm agin' it.

I don't have a problem with killing the fuckers. It's just a lot cheaper to lock them up for life than go through 8-10 years of appeals with a guy who doesn't own jack shit other than maybe a stack of Playboys. If you are worried about escape just cut their legs off at the hips.

I said moderately conservative. On some social issues I lean more to the liberal side but if there is any hint of money involved (as in the gov't spending mine) then I am extremely conservative.

I'm pro-gay marriage from the legal standpoint. I don't see why gay men and lesbian women should be denied the right to go down to the JOP or rent a hall or whatever and have the same legal protections for their life-partner that a hetero couple has. From the religious standpoint, if clergy don't want to perform these ceremonies then they shouldn't have to and they should be able to say "Not in my mosque/church/synagogue/whatever."

Pro-gun rights, pro-death penalty when there is a HUGE preponderance of evidence (we shouldn't have to feed/house/clothe/medicate the Dahmer's and Manson's of the world), pro-state's rights (I LOVE that Montana and Utah just told the Fed's to "suck-it" when it comes to the making and intra-state trade of guns and that Texas has similar legislation pending).

I, personally, believe the federal gov't has turned into a giant beast that has usurped power not just from the states but from the people themselves. It was never meant to be a "nanny-state" (yes I'm one of those evil people that would do away with most forms of welfare). The Founders meant to have a weak Federal gov't and to have most of the power residing with the states not in D.C. but find a politician willing to actually go along with their own job description...if you do s/he's probably not up to the federal level yet.

Oh and I'm VERY anti-activist judges (particularly on the Supreme Court). Their job is to decide the cases that come before them fall into the framework of the constitution...NOT to legislate from the bench.

I'm one of those who thinks "better to pay the cost to support 99 evil doers for life in prison than to execute 1 innocent man".

The appeal process seriously needs to be revamped! Not sure how but it does. Perhaps a streamlining process for death penalty cases.

Conservatives always poll decent here. They just aren't very politically verbal.

I'd fight for you. But some guy with a rap sheet that takes 10 minutes to print out? Fuck him. Prison is fucked up to begin with. It's higher education for criminals.

Interesting...all you libertarian death-penalty folks.

I believe that some people are unredeemable, or commit crimes beyond the pale.

Locking them up for life is an option, but as far as I'm concerned that amounts to unnecessary torture. Punishment should be reserved for those who can be redeemed and returned to society. I'm especially against the notion of locking people in solitary for life because of stories like these.

Of course, I'd blow the doors off our current prison system altogether. It's fucked up from the get-go and exacerbates our crime problems all over the place.

Pro gay marriage, pro choice, pro environment, pro universal health care, pro gun regulation, pro social safety nets, pro union (mostly), pro education, pro funding for the arts.

Anti death penalty. Yes, some people are just bad enough that they should be wiped off the earth but the current system is horribly flawed and I'd never risk executing the wrong person - as has happened.

Irony: The first gay marriage I was ever invited to I had to decline...because the location was an aquarium and I won't put a toe inside one of those places. Don't ask me to choose between you or the marine mammals. Not fair.

Yes, my problem isn't with exterminating evil doers...it's with killing people by mistake.

A long rap sheet is not a guarantee that you are the guilty party.

I have essentially the same caveat, so long as we bear in mind the difference between 'beyond a reasonable doubt' and 'beyond all doubt'. I've seen a jury I was in turn into screaming chaos because a member just could not get that distinction.

(This was a theft case, not a capital murder case.)

Yep. See: David Milgaard. 27 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, that's pretty heinous, but at least he was in Canada and not Texas or he'd be dead.

Interesting stuff to ponder

Ok... voted moderately conservative.

Fiscally conservative

Judicially conservative

Education... our system needs serious improvement and vouchers would make competition for school dollars produce something better than we have now.

Pro-gay union/marriage... people should be able to enter into a legal contract as a couple (as in marriage) and then have those rights. And people will call it what they want to call it, so...

Pro-choice.... We have the freedom to choose for abortion and I will support a woman's right to make whatever choice she feels she must make. That said, I don't believe in it, personally. I won't say I haven't considered it... I have for every pregnancy I've been through, but only because it's intellectually unsound for me to not consider every option. In my heart and mind, once there's conception, there's life to be cherished and that's what I'm good at. My rant for the day. :p

Pro-Small government

Pro-death penalty.... when guilt is "beyond all doubt"

Pro-gun

With Homburg on the Green issue... stewards of the planet and not being wasteful and all that.

With Netzach on the government regulations for the most part. Whenever they are big news, they are mostly a shell game to hide real issues. Metaphorical blow job line... made me laugh! But I agree.

And Abraxis and Homburg... I'll protect you if you get PMS and are being hunted down to be killed slowly.... and if I'm too late, I solemnly promise to make it quick and relatively painless. ;-D

And gotta love that mellow, watching the sunset on the deck, open another bottle schaudenfreude!

A bit left of center, I suppose.

Pro-life
Pro-gun with some sensible restrictions
Pro-gay marriage
Pro-conservationism (not exactly PETA)

I voted Democrat for the first time ever this election. My ultra-conservative family swears I'm going to hell. My preference, however, is as little government involvement as possible. That's pretty rare these days, though, on either side of the fence.

"Very liberal" if you please

I please. (Don't tell anyone but I don't even know if any of those labels mean anything.)

I selected moderately liberal but looking over my answers compared to everyone else's I'm beginning to look "Very liberal", too.

Glad I didn't mention I'm also pro legalized marijuana and prostitution! Whew.

Oh hey!!! I'm pro prostitution, too, but then we'll need more of those NASTY regulations for the prostitution biz! At least on the OSHA level... yeah...

*No sex on a ladder over six feet tall without a hard hat...
*No sex behind the wheel of a moving vehicle... OR while operating a moving vehicle.... THIS INCLUDES PLANES, STEAMROLLERS, CROSS-COUNTRY SKIS, WHEELBARROWS... YOU GET MY DRIFT, YOU KNOW YOU DO, KINKY BASTARDS!!!...
*No sex with farm animals (without their written consent and waivers and THOROUGH check ups with health inspectors)... No one wants to see our barnyard friends running around with the clap! (We'll need to get the Dept. of Aggy guys in on this one!)
*No sex with electrical appliances or devices in a shower, hot tub, steam room, swimming pool, fountain, lake, stream ocean, PUDDLE, again with you KINKY BASTARDS!! NO MIXING ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES AND WATER WHATSOEVER!!!....
*No having sex while blowdrying your hair in the shower... oh wait, isn't that covered by... JUST put it in there for the idiots that want to sue Conair, Calgon, and Paul Mitchell!

I think this puts me a step or two closer to the "somewhat conservative" category. *pumps fist* Getting closer to that middle of the road... I just like the idea of driving on both sides! ;-)
