Would like to do just that. Make pics from movie scenes. Do I need a special software program?

It depends on what you use to play the MPeG files -- some DVD players, like PowerDVD as an example, have a "save frame as JPeG function that will work on anything they can play;DVDs, VCD, and movie files of various types.

If you don't have a save frame function or a image prograam like irfanview or PaintShop Pro that has a ddicated capture function that will let you select part of the screen to capture, the Print Screen button will usually capture the whole screen to the Windows clipboard where you can paste into most image editing programs. Unfortunately, some programs block that particular function or usurp it for another purpose. Sometimes it requires, CTRL-PRTSCR to send the image to the clipboard and sometime it just doesn't work.

Well installed Irfanview and figured out how to capture the image but how do you save just the actual image and not the image and the program box surrounding the screen?

On the capture setup dialogue, there is a choice for "capture foreground client area. Anything extraneous that setting captures can be cropped out.

you might want to check out PaintShop Pro from www.jasc.com -- it's a thirty day trail version, but PSP's capture function cn be set to allow you to select the area to capture.

an easier way is to pause the movie while it is playing, hit printscreen, open paint then go to edit, then paste and just save from there
