How to stop Firefox erasing my bookmarks

How do I stop Firefox from deleting my bookmarks every few weeks?
Why does it do this?

I know that there are esoteric ways to retrieve the bookmarks, but this auto-deletion thing happens way too frequently for that to be the only solution.

I use Firefox seven days a week and have never had this problem. Can you explain in a bit more detail what's happening?

Yes, it doesn't seem to happen to everyone. Every random while, firefox simply erases my stored bookmarks with no prompting or warning. I have no idea why.

I've had my computer purged for viruses by a professional, but that didn't help.

It seems like others have this problem, and it might be due to several factors, including a google plug-in.

Thanks! I haven't seen that site before. I think one of the suggestions I found there might help (the way I shut down firefox).

Try this website. It's a social bookmarking website. It's free to join. You create your favorites list and then you have access to it from ANY computer! It's great. Go to google and type this in:

del.icio.us

I feel for you. I have gotten to the point where I can replace my bookmarks from the backups in 30 seconds. My bookmarks get blown out when I lose power with Firefox open.

It seems to me that Firefox has a rather dumb way of handling bookmarks. At last IE treats each entry in the favorites list as a separate file and loss of powere or corruption of a a bookmark file just means that particular shortcut gets corrupted and then only if power fails within a couple of seconds of saving the bookmark.

The simple solution to Firefox's bookmark problems is to just not use Firefox's favorites system: right-click anywhere on a webpage you want to bookmark and choose "create shortcut" -- that will put a .LNK file (aka a shortcut) on your desktop. That file can be copied or moved to any folder you want to use as your favorites folder; C:\Windows\profiles\<yourname here>\favorites is where IE stores the .LNK files it creates when you "Add to Favorites."

I doubt it is Firefox that is blowing away your bookmarks.

I have had this browser for 4 years and not lost one bookmark in this time. On the other hand I never use IE or install Google or Yahoo tool bars either. I don't update Java either when asked....it isn't necessary in Firefox.

One plug-in that I really like on Firefox is the one that selectively blocks ads that you don't want to see. I forget its name but it shows up in the top right-hand-side as a stop sign with ABP in it. I hate video ads especially on Yahoo. The can slow down your machine and in general are a distraction....with this plug-in they are blocked completely. Static ads don't bother me...you could eliminate those too but I don't bother...it is just the annoying ones that I block.

mozillazine.org would seem to be disagreeing with you -- at least in the sense that it is Firefox not properly closing its proprietary bookmark file that is the problem.

Youare correct, that Firefox is not deliberately "auto-deleting" the bookmarks, but the way Firefox handles bookmarks that is ausing the problem.
