I have a story I want to flesh out into a full-length novel. A love story of a sort. I think it would flag as a taboo/incest story but it's not technically incest so here is a quick a dirty summary. Please tell me how you would categorize this.
Sarah is 38, just getting out of a marriage that she had been in the past 15 years, which broke every part of her self-image and self-worth down. She's struggling to find her identity and ends up quitting her job, cashing out her retirement and flying to Asia to find adventure and herself. (Very simplified here). While in India, she meets a young man, a cricketer, and has a brief fling with him. It lasts a few weeks before she breaks it off, fearing if she stayed any longer, both would be hurt by the inevitable separation, and returns home.
She ends up reconnecting with an old flame from college, before her marriage. He had been a professor of her (still deciding) class that she became a little too close of friends with. When he left the country for a family emergency, she was heartbroken. Over the years, they touched base on occasion, but he had a family, and she had her husband. After she visited India, where she fell in love with the place, they reconnected. His wife had passed, and over the course of months and a few meetings, they ended up together, and a short while later, they married. The first ceremony was in the US, and later he took her to India for a Hindu ceremony where she met his family for the first time. She meets brothers, sister, cousins, aunts and uncles, and his sons. One son is a police officer in the state capital, the other... the young cricketer she had met over a year ago.
Life can be so cruel sometimes. Bad enough the meeting stirs up feelings she had tried to shove back and forget about, but they all live under one roof. The barrier of awkward avoidance crumbles, and their chemistry reignites, and they end up once more in each other's arms.
So it is a step-mom/step-son thing but they don't meet in that context so I feel like it doesn't really have the incestuous undertone. Would it still be categorized as such? I am leaning more toward the interracial category.
Incidentally, it is based in part on my actual life experience (minus the step-mom thing) and is blended with a fantasy that my partner and I created during some of our naughty chats.
Thoughts?
