I'm not sure if I agree. For one thing, the racists and misogynists out there were bound to vote Republican anyway. I think, besides the price of eggs, what won it for Trump was that people are very, very gullible. He spent the whole campaign spouting false claims and promises he couldn't keep (and probably never even intended to try to keep) - but they were easy to understand and they sounded good.
