If you're into writing shorter pieces, there are two flash fiction threads around. One is 100 words, based on the current theme, which changes with every tenth submission. (The submissions are posted right into the thread by the writer.) The other is 300-500 words, with a deadline of midnight july 31. (Yikes! That's tomorrow!) I believe the challenge is 'Leave it by the door'. With this one, you submit via PM to Liar, the keeper of the thread, and he posts the stories anonymously for voting. The winner gets a material reward of unknown value. The 100-word challenge can be found here at AH. The 300-500 word challenge is in the new 'Writers Challenges' sub forum at the top of the page, with a thread referencing it here at the AH.

What I like about flash fiction is the economy of words. When you have a word limit, you're forced to make each one count - which ends up making you a better writer (theoretically.)

There is a How-To article on writing flash fiction in the last How-To contest, which can be found somewhere around here.

Wow! Thank you for all the responses! It's finally up! I have to admit that I logged on daily to see if it was accepted yet or not, but didn't dare come back here until it was.

You know you want to read it.

I'm still working on the other parts & developing the characters. There are a few twists that I'm working out. I'm also perfectionist at heart, so that's the hardest part is finally saying, "Yes. That's what I wanted to say."
