I like Trains

Three years later and they still haven't let me ride in the cab.

Much like my love life, I got tired of being ignored and gave up on it.

Have you tried pacing the train on a horse while waving a pistol around?

Here's six minutes worth of the 4-8-4 Union Pacific #844 just screaming across the Wyoming prairie at 75 mph.

You can hear that whistle blowing— if this doesn't get your blood flowing, check to see if you've got a pulse.

Good God, what a machine that is!! How much weight is speeding along that rail?

That's called an undercutter machine. I clicked on this thread and expected a TOTALLY different thing.. As I'm sure most of us did. However, I have been employed as a Railroad conductor for almost 18 years for a major U.S. railroad. If anyone has questions or wants to know how certain things work I will be happy to answer the best I can. Granted, most FRN's are more knowledgeable about the equipment than I care to be. Just offering some of my expertise on this subject. Everyone always has questions when they hear what I do as a profession.

Do they give you the blue and white striped hat for free, or do you have to pay for it?

After driving a few times with it, I found out this train sucks. Too noisy, too hard and un-ergonomic seats in both 1st and 2nd class, both even spaced unergonomic, with tables that have only place for one or two cups

Compared to those RB trains, the RE trains are pure quality. Noiseless, ergonomic seats in the 2nd class, leather seats in the 1st, tables in laptop-friendly size even in 2nd class. I have no problem to wait 10 minutes longer for that (which I do almost everyday....)

And about not being able to ride in the cab of the locomotive? Make friends with a railroader. I've given everyone of my friends and family rides.. If not taken them on full runs. Usually if you sit still and don't fidget too much we'll let you run the train.. maybe.. only if you're good.

Staggering isn't it.....with the distances in the US I find it hard to believe the US is so far behind the curve on this one.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to travel on a Maglev in Shanghai; pretty impressive.

Woof!

Behind what curve? Running passenger service at a loss and on the taxpayers dime?
