I Miss Board Games

Computers are fun, but I really miss sitting around with my family and playing "Masterpiece" or "Risk" for hours on end. Everyone once in a blue my friends and I whip out "Scattegories" or "Pictionary", but all too infrequently. I miss the thrill of something landing on my hotel laden Park Place, or having an opponent's Marshall smash into by "Stratego" bomb, or, hell, shooting the moon in a good game of Hearts. I never laughed harder than I did playing board games. Even games as lame as "Operation" were enough to send us into hysterics. Lord, I recall some all-day gin rummy sessions that left me exhausted.

I think "Matermind" and Chess were my favorites (even though there was very little laughing during those contests), but I miss the comraderie of all board games.

Thankfully my son is old enough to start playing a few games more complex than "Candy Land". Still, I don't ever get to sit around a card table for any extended period anymore.

What game do you miss?

I miss a good game of.........

:p

Risk is very cool.

The European feint, combined with a blitzkrieg assault on West Africa from Brazil always worked well for me.

The key is the Americas...always remember that...

:)

You mean there is other things besides my computer and playstation2... WOW!

I beg to differ, PC. The key is to take Australia early and hold it - not hard to do since it's small and relatively isolated. Then you just let your armies pile up there turn after turn until you've got a horde strong enough to crush Southeast Asia. And then on to the rest of the world!

I love Risk!

The social calendar for my apartment complex includes An Evening of Board Games every couple weeks. Great way to meet the neighbors, and so far we've played Clue, Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Scattergories, and Pictionary. I think someone's bringing Cranium next time. Much more interesting way to spend the evening than in front of the tube.

I miss backgammon too. My ex and I used to play for hours in front of the fireplace. I think when we quit playing was when we quit talking.

And Rook, did you ever play the card game rook? Used to play with my parents when I was a kid.

And Dixon, I remember some marathon Monopoly games, had to quit for the night and start again later. My daughters have started to like to play board games again, though. We played Life the other night and Sorry last week. You are right, it is good clean family fun.

Hearts.

My family used to play it a lot when I was younger and we all lived closer together. The best times were when we would have 8 - 10 people playing and have to use two decks. Because high cards could cancel each other out (if someone lay down the Ace of Hearts, for example, another player could lay down the other Ace and "cancel" the Ace out, leaving the trick to the next highest card) this meant that you were never truly safe in any hand.

With two decks it became impossible to shoot the moon, but the compensation of seeing someone lay down the Two of Spades and end up taking both Queens and a fistful of Hearts besides was more than worth it. On the rare occasions when enough of us are together these days, we still play a few hands and it's still a lot of fun.

Another thing I miss: When I lived in California, I used to have a regular Poker game every other Tuesday. Usually six or seven guys, playing a lot of split-pot games (Hold-Em, Anaconda, High (or low) Chicago). Damn, that was fun.

Ooh, I thought of two more:

Connect Four. Loved that game. I got to the point where I could anticipate moves up to seven moves ahead.

Cribbage. Love drinking a mug of tea and yelling "muggins!" at the other player in a fake snooty English accent.

Does anybody remember Flinch? I bought a replacement deck for my mom a few months ago. She had worn hers out! I'm wary of playing Yahtzee with hubby. He cheats! LOL Love backgammon, too.

We still play board games here in the backwoods of PA. When we aren't cow tipping.

I always miss Risk first and foremost. My friends and I used to have ALL NIGHT sessions over this one...with shots for every lost toss of the dice...let me tell you, diplomatic relations took on whole new meaning. "Sure, I won't attack Ural, but lose the shirt..."

I was once down to my last territory - Greenland - and defended it for 26 turns. No shit. That was in HIGH SCHOOL. To this day, my friends and I will say "Forget it, I'm not budging. I'm GREENLAND on this one." LOL.

I miss killer Parcheesi. And Clue.

And that game called Titan which took weeks to play.

And Pente. Anyone remember Pente? I loved that game.

MP ;)

I love Pente MP !!!

:p

I agree that Australlia was the key to Risk, but only if you played with five or more people. You could hole up there building up your armies for two or three hours, while the other players obliterated each other, before launching a blitzkreig.

That's one strategy, but the good thing about getting the America's (you have to do it early) is that you get so many more armies each turn. And there are only three entrances so it is easily defended, but you can still escape if you need to.

I am the "Pictionary Champion of the World."

I love to play Chess, but I seldom win.

Anybody ever play "Talking Football?" The board was a gridiron and you would insert little records into a player and spin it to your defensive stance, and you could "blitz" but the announcer would do the play-by-play of the touchdown if your opponent picked the "Draw Play."

How about "Clue"

"Mystery Date?"

"Yahtzee!"

"Careers"

I can kill anybody playing "Battleship"

I get together with friends every once in a while to play hearts or even better a game called Buck Euchre. I also have a regular gin rummy game that's been going on for over two years. We play hundreds of games and never get bored with this silly game.

Board games are great fun!

Monopoly...definately Monopoly. It's the perfect game to play when you're drinking alcohol...ok, well, at least we used to in the dorms...

I have lost my Pente game in various moves over the years but do play a lot of Rummikub, Othello, Parcheesi, Mastermind, Backgammon and Rack-O.

I can find no takers for a game of Trivial Pursuit anymore :(

But living in Indiana, Euchre is life :)
