I know it sounds suggestive, but save the wisecracks, please.

I have new license plates and I need to take the old ones off. I can't get one of the screws on my license plate frame out- it's all rusted. I've tried three different screwdrivers, a wrench, two different pairs of pliers, and the reverse mode of my drill with a screwdriver attachment.

I can get a ticket if I have my old plates on still- does anyone have any ideas?

You can also try some stuff called liquid wrench that works pretty good. If that doesn't work your only alternative just about is to drill it out. I would have someone do this unless you are very comfortable using power tools.

PB Blaster is the best rustly bolt loostener there is. Most every auto - hdwe store will have it in an aersol spray can. It is in a very cute retro looking can, and doesn't smell at all bad. Spray a bit of that on the recalcitrant bolts. Let it do its thing for a few minutes. Then grip the heads of those puppies with a good vise grips. Twist em mightly hard till they either come loose, or break completely. Then replace the mangled bolts with a new set.

Here is what that stuff looks like: http://www.pbblaster.com/store/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=1

good luck

well I am all for DIY ers but......

if all else fails drive too your local auto repair shop. Wear something low cut. Then ask the Manager if he could help you out. If you have a Pep Boys or something similar give it a shot.

When I used to work in the auto parts industry Guys would fight over oppertunities like this. It is always a Manly thing to help out a Lovely lady.

If you really want to do it yourself I have some more tips just pm me.

Thanks all. I prefer to take care of things like this myself. I don't like being thought of as helpless for stupid, minor things.

And if you do get them out and replace them... don't forget to lube the new screws with some good grease so this doesn't happen again.

You aren't helpless!

Been There! Hated to ask for help! I still do but I realized I hate doing "car" things even more. Just recently had to buy a small part for the car I knew I could do. While in the store my son reminded me that we needed new wiper blades. The salesman was wonderful ... picked out what I needed and kindly offered to install them.

And no, I was not wearing the wonderbra or a short skirt ... and I had a wonderful chaperone (the son!!).

No shame in asking for help! But ... if you insist on DIY ... please let us know what worked. My tags expire soon too and with all this salty air I usually have the same problem. (Brute force is the only thing that has worked for me)

Good Luck,
emer

As has been mentioned already, you may have to break the screw. Or possibly even more drastic measures will be needed.

When the obdurate fastener is finally disposed of, I would advise that BOTH screws be replaced with NYLON. All auto stores that I know of carry them to prevent recurrences of your present problem.

All new cars come with nylon nuts ( permanent ) already installed.

Sears sells a very nice set of screw extractors (3 of them in various sizes) for about $20. Get a lot of grip in a busted head and fit a standard drill.

OTOH, you could just divorce him. <G>

Thanks for all of the suggestions. On Thursday, my boyfriend came over and got the screw out for me. He had to rip off the license plate and frame, but that didn't matter because I had to put new ones on anyway.

awwww... and i was just going to recommend a torch. Heat the bolt up and it should turn right off... Not so hot as it burns other things or melts them, but just heat the sucker up and they usually turn right off.
