I Remember This Tree

When I was little my mother used to work so I would spend every day over my grandmothers house. In the hall closet there was an old cookie tin full of buttons, it was part of her sewing kit. I would spend hours sorting thru them, looking at them and making up games with them. Many were very old and quite ornate. Nothing like the cheap, flat, plastic ones of today.

But it's the smell that I still remember. Dust and old tin. Anyone that has ever smelled that before will know what I'm talking about, it's vert destinctive. Everynow and then I get a whiff of that smell somehere and it always takes me back to those old buttons. :)

I miss being able to see the sun set behind the channel islands...

...watching the fog roll in off the ocean at dusk

...hopping on my horse, no saddle, no bridle, just a halter and lead rope, and riding down the beach, laughing while she tried to dance in the surf

...believing that my mother and father would always be here.

I miss there only being three or four TV stations, not eighty.

I miss not being expected to answer any email within four hours, or being expected to be in arm's reach of a cell phone at all hours of the day.

I miss waking up bright an bushy-tailed and excited at 5 AM on a Saturday morning, suffering through shows like Vegetable Soup until the real cartoons came on. And running around playing with friends on Saturday afternoons that seemed to last a week.

Fast-forwarding to college, I miss skinny-dipping with the entire women's crew team :).
