I seem to have been discussing Firefly most of the evening. Any Buffy fans out there?

I loved Buffy, liked Angel (until they messed Cordelia around), and found and loved Firefly just before Fox foxed it (just like Brisco and Space: Above and Beyond and...so many others). I bailed on Dollhouse well before the end of the 1st season (and had to look it up to see if there even was a second season).

I agree with Emily that Marsters was definitely a better actor than Boreanaz in the early going but Angel improved over the years and Spike's character became more caricaturized before recovering somewhat on Angel.

Everything went off the rails towards the end. Look at what they did to Giles.

Giles had to leave because ASH wanted to return to England. He's had a great bunch of disparate roles - posh baddies in particular, but also made an excellent Pirate King for Pirates of Penzance at the Savoy Theatre.

Swashbuckling Giles with tight leather trousers, boots, and mascara was quite the sight.

Angel was getting into its stride when it all went daft then had to finish in two episodes. And Boreanaz proved he could actually act (not that anyone seems to have asked him to be anything other than wooden since). A boon for the fanfic writers, I suppose. James Marsters seemed to be getting a bit typecast with roles in Andromeda and Doctor Who, but I think has focused on other projects since.

No, I meant season 7 Giles where he came back undermining Buffy and acting in an underhand manner. Just being a totally different character.

Head had two young daughters and felt he was missing their childhood. Daisy and something else…

He's clearly done well for himself since, but affectionardos of 'What the Hell Were They Thinking' TV will want to know that his first role after Buffy was the short-lived series 'Manchild'.

Someone at the BBC had the bright idea of 'What if Sex and the City but Men?'

From what I remember it wasn't actively so bad its worth seeking out, but it certainly was something.

EDIT: Checking the boxset it doesn literally have the words 'SEX and the CITY for MEN' on the front

Men Behaving Badly, but older. I'd forgotten about that. Nigel Havers just... no.

It wasn't that bad, but yeah.

A bit like Buffy s7, really. They'd kinda gone past the character arcs for most of the characters, didn't have time to establish the new ones (Wood could have been really interesting, and at least one of the new Slayers should have had a personality beyond Kennedy's 'annoying, nasal voice, somehow shags Willow'), and the Giles-realising-he's-past-it was done cack-handedly. Giles and one-eyed Xander having a bonding moment (no, not like that!) could have worked really well as they both realise they're superfluous.

Didn't Fox air the episodes of Firefly out of order or something of that nature? Do you remember Nathan Fillion being in Buffy as Caleb?

I was going to ask "How does the second best SF show, Firefly* relate to Buffy? then someone mentioned Joss Whedon. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Justice League... I think he was even involved in Farscape. The guy had a talent for turning every project he touched into a clone of the back stage production of the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The only thing that has helped Joss to sneak softly into obscurity with his massive residual checks is the fact that most articles that outline his abusive behavior are buried behind paywalls. I did not see Buffy or Angel because I was in North Dakota and Korea when they were on the air and the WB didn't air in either area. When I got back and was able to watch, it was in re-runs and terribly out of order. I'm bummed that I missed it. I'll try to catch up but I'm tied up in re-watching Farscape, Babylon 5, and my new loves - Sanctuary and the Dresden Files

*It's behind behind Babylon 5, to me the difference is that B5 was allowed to end, Serenity wound up Firefly but it was 3 hours too short to do a proper wrap-up.

They did. There was a lot of friction between Fox and Whedon; sounds like Fox didn't really understand what kid of show it was, Whedon tried to ignore their requirements and make it the way he wanted, and their response was to not show a pilot that didn't meet their requirements.

I discovered Firefly after it hit the ScIFi channel and thereafter was hooked.
Four of the most beautiful women (five if you include Christina and each in their own special way) in one terrific show. What's not to like?
