Sabaka smelled it wavering through the trees. Something faint, but there just the same. He turned to the right, curious as to what exactly was burning.
It was an unmistakable, if faint, aroma of fire. He took in a big whiff, judging the slight breeze that now shook the trees around them.
Yes, a fire, not too far away.
Someone was out here. He wondered who? This was mostly Mammothulus country. The other tribes didn't bother to go this deep into the valley. The only one he could think of off the top of his head was...
This wasn't good at all. He knew of the rivals between them and Saberus. He could see if any of the men back at his tribe knew that someone was so close, they'd kill whoever it was, and then eat him.
They were very cruel when it came to rivals.
He moved swiftly now, expertly terracing the ground beneath him. Under the pale moonlight he moved like an experienced panther through the woods. His stick barely touching the ground as he ducked through ravine's and jumped over low hanging branches.
The warmth and the light now shone in the surrounding trees, symbolizing the fire that was now there.
He stumbled through the last of the brush, to encounter the men who had built it, and warn them of the danger.
Except there were no men.
His stick, which he now held with two hands in front of him, almost like a weapon revealed in the small opening of the forest nothing more than a woman leaning against a tree.
Sabaka walked to the outer edgeso f the fire, glancing deeper in the forest to spot if any of the men had perhaps ran off, or heard of his coming and ducked in hiding.
None that he could see or smell were near though. Just him and...
a female?
He had not seen her before, so he could only assume she was from Saberus. Although, in his darkest dreams he could not imagine what a woman, from another tribe would be doing out here, so close to his tribe.
Did she realze how much danger she was in?
"Are you," he almost didn't want to hear the answer, cause he knew it already, "Are you alone out in the forest?"
He tried not to sound it, but he looked at her as if she had lost her sanity.
