As a purely literary comment I would add that this use of "got", while not actually incorrect, is to be deprecated; "sink" would be preferable.

Yes, sink their teeth is much more elegant.

Your version does, however, subtly distort the emphasis of what I was saying. I was not saying that these people *should* get their teeth into the sentence; rather, that the sentence was ripe for being mauled. And Rhys knew that. And I doubt anyone really cares.

I'm sure you'll agree that an inflexible approach to grammatical "rules" (including the "do not end a sentence with a preposition" nonsense) is a hindrance to style, not a prerequisite.
