Cathy and Katie were celebrating the finalization of Katie’s divorce by having lunch at The Tower, high atop the bank building in their medium-sized town. As they ate and reminisced about college days, looking out over the campus of the college they had both attended and where now Cathy worked in the admissions office, the dark days of the end of Katie’s marriage, the separation, and the divorce wrangling faded into the background.
As they drank their postprandial coffee, Cathy broke into a conspiratorial smile and spoke lowly so that ears at neighboring tables couldn’t catch her words. “So, tell me. Who are you dating? I know that you were seeing that Eric from work a while back. Are you two still an item?”
Katie’s eyes grew somber. “No, I’m not dating anyone. Yes, I was seeing Eric for a while. I went out a few times with a couple other people, too, people introduced to me by matchmaking friends at work. But not now. Not anymore.”
“’Not anymore’? You sound like you’ve given up! Come on. This is Cathy. What gives?”
Katie shrugged. “No magic. Really, there hasn’t been any for me since long before Chris and I broke up.”
“Magic? What are we talking here? Chemistry? Love? Those things take some time, you know. You're not looking for 'love at first sight' like we were back in college, are you?"
Katie looked up and into Cathy’s eyes and her jaw set purposefully. “Ok. I’ve not talked about this to anyone but my gyne, but we’ve never hidden anything from each other. I’ve not had an orgasm for more than a year. I just can’t. Not with Chris. Not with Eric. Not by myself. Nada. No man wants to be with a frigid woman, and I’m tired of going through the motions. Or gyrations. Or whatever. I hardly even get wet. And yes, I know about lube. It’s been the only way I’ve been able to do anything with anyone.”
Cathy’s eyes widened. “You’ve tried ‘other ways’? You know, toys?”
“I could pay for everyone’s lunch here today with what I’ve spent on vibrators, Cathy. And lubes and oils? Lubes, scented lubes, flavored lubes, heating lubes and whatever they call lubes that make you feel cold. With a partner, with a partner and a vibrator. Yadda, yadda, yadda. And nada.” The look on Katie’s face was fierce, almost as if she dared Cathy to suggest anything else so that she could say she’d tried that, too, but there was also a deep sadness underlying her demeanor. The slump of her shoulders and the despair in her eyes told all.
Now Cathy’s jaw set as she leaned over and put her hand over Katie’s. “You’ve talked to your gyne and there’s nothing physical, right?” At Katie’s nod, Cathy continued. “There’s an adjunct professor at the college who teaches some psych classes they’ve added in the past few years. He also consults, I understand. The student workers in my office, the girls anyway, say that he’s one of the best teachers they’ve ever had. My understanding is that he’s very feminist-friendly, and he’s a leader on campus for issues like date-rape and women’s health."
"But I’ve heard other things, even better, about his private consulting. I overheard a couple women at lunch the other day. One was telling the other how he had ‘opened up another world’ to her. I didn’t know what she meant until she said a little later ‘Now I know every time I open my legs I’m going to explode sooner or later!’”
Katie shook her head. “No, I don’t think there’s anything that he can do for me. I’m not going to waste my money on anything like that.”
Cathy took both Katie’s hands into hers. “I looked into it, Katie. I, well, I thought maybe he might give me a little lift, too. I’ve not made any appointment, but I found that he has a one-time fee, no matter the number of consults. Free initial consult. And he guarantees satisfaction.” Cathy burst into giggles as she emphasized the word “satisfaction.” “Sorry, pun intended.”
“Ok, I’ll think about it.”
Two weeks later, 8 text messages from Cathy -- all the same “made that appointment yet?” -- and a bit of checking on her own into the man’s background and Katie was waiting in the anteroom of his college office. She didn’t really know what she expected the man would look like, but it certainly wasn't the man who came out of the office talking to a pair of coeds.
