Ola looked down through the trees at the beast below. It paced back and forth, its nose sniffing the air for her scent. She tried to be still, to hold her breath, or at least calm it, hoping the beast wouldn't hear or see her, praying the wind would pick up and carry her scent away...
It stopped, raising its nose a little. It had her found her, would know her exact location in mere seconds, and when it realized where she was, she was as good as dead.
The creature stood perfectly still, its fur raising as it grew more intent, its long hog-like nose pointing toward the moon above. The tusks reflected the moon's light, making the white ivory sparkle. ANd still, all those boar's features, and it stood on two feet like a man.
It growled beneath its breath, looking around, having lost her scent again in a light breeze.
She had to get away from it, had to jump down and run the opposite way, hoping to get a head start.
She moved slowly out onto a branch, watching the beast below, then leaned forward, the boar man-beast standing below.
She took in a deep breath, then jumped...
When she hit the ground, her legs conpressed against her body, sending shockwaves of pain and discomfort through her legs and hips and back. She ignored them, hurriedly getting to her feet and starting away at a stumble. Withing seconds, she was moving at a sprint, hearing the beast's hooves pound on the ground behind her, quickly becoming closer. She wondered how long before it caught up to her, hoping it would finally tired from the chase and knowing it wouldn't.
She'd come North not knowing what she would find. A child of only fourteen alone in the vast Wilderness that was Althernargn, "the untamed land." There were stories of what was here, half-human beasts that were neither man nor animal , both man and animal. How could she have believed them.
But her father had been both man and animal, a man who beat his wife and an animal who tried to rape his daughter. She'd fled, hoping to find peace here.
Instead, she found the beasts, or rather they had found her. And they apparently intended to make a meal of her.
She ran in a straight line, afraid that if she changed direction, it would slow her too much.
Ahead, the trees gave way to a clearing, where the ground was mostly dirt. She could distantly hear a stream.
Its pants were all she focused on though, deep breaths getting closer by the second.
She focused on the clearing, wondering if someone might be there, her eyes locked straight ahead instead of on her feet where they belonged.
her ankles struck a fallen limba dn she sprawled forward, grping for the ground in front of her. SHe landed hard, rolling onto her back and raising her arms as if they would fend the beast off on their own.
The boar manbeast leapt into the air, falling toward her with wide eyes and an open mouth.
A second later, it was gone, draw from the air infront of her, snatched off to the side.
SHe followed its movement, seing a dark figure towering above the beast, which still stood on its two hind legs. THe figure drew back and struck the boar manbeast, causing it to whine as only a member of the pig family can, and sent it squealing into the night the way it came.
Her head felt heavy then, and the world swam before her eyes and was gone.

When she awoke, she was warm and comfortable. The sun was bright above, a great contrast to her last memory, in which the Boarbeast had almost killed her in the moonlit clearing. SHe squinted, trying to let her eyes adjust as she sat up.
"Awake already?" A voice asked. It was male, deep but soothing.
SHe turned toward its source, then flinched back, raising her hands as hse had done with the boarbeast.
"Oh...my," she panted, starting to panic.
It stood to its full height, about six-and-a-half feet in height, its shoulders broad, its mane hanging down over its shoulders as though it were a human's hair.
"Don't...don't hurt me."
"I don't intend to hurt you..." It replied, still calm. "In fact, I believe I saved your life."
She thought about that. This creature had been that tall figure, and it spoke English? SHe thought about it, deciding she had no choice but to believe.
"What do you want with me? What do you plan to--"
"Calm down, friend," he said, "You've nothing to worry about."
She settled back, realizing that it probably spoke the truth, but realizing more that it had manhandled the boarbeast, and that if it could do that, running might tempt it to follow.
"Okay, then what's going on?" She asked the lionman.
It settled down onto its knees again.
"Let's start from the beginning...My name is Byron..."

Byron

The girl seemed frightened, which only made sense, but still, I felt compelled to make friends. SHe needed a friend if she intended to remain in the North, and my companions and I would make several.
"You'll have to relax a little. i know you've been through some tough experiences with the creatures here, but we're not all bad."
SHe just stared at me, as if amazed I could talk.
"I'm Ola," she replied, not taking my hand.
"Hello, Ola," I returned, pleased at least to hear her voice. "Now,you needn't be frightened, my friends will be back shortly and we'll continue on..."
"Friends? There're more of you?"
She appeared panicy then.
"Yes, there are six of us, not to mention others like us everywhere..."
"Everywhere?"
I nodded. "There are some like the one you encountered last night, and some like myself and my friends."
SHe looked down, obvious unsure of what was going on.
"If you wish to remain with us, I can explain everything, but it will take some time, and a lot of open-mindedness on your part..."

Half-bear, half-man, he tore the half-snake in two, watching in delight as those evil halves squirmed and writhed, attempting to lash out at him. "I am Mageta, King of Bears! You dare attack my cub!?" he roared, lashing out at the leader of the snakes. He caught him in the side of the head, snapping his neck and collapsing him. Mageta roared again and all knew the battle to save the cub was over. The snakes gathered around the corpse of their dead former leader and prepared to bury him. Mageta picked his cub up and handed him to a nurse. The other half-bears formed a ring about him and they set off towards their village.

Byron

She was beginning to see what I meant by "open-mindedness on her part." She looked at me, wide-eyed, wanting to argue that i was insane but knowing that the fact that i sat before her made my what I was telling her accurate.
"So, how many are there?"
"Millions on our home continent, but here, probably only thousands, maybe tens of thousands but I doubt it."
"How did they get here?"
"Well," I began, "That's a little more difficult. We have a society much like yours, and we have criminals. Many criminals. The difficulty is, for our kind, some are truly too strong to be ruled, or imprisoned. Our leaders decided to abandon those who led the most violent lives here, not knowing that humans lived below."
"So...you're a criminal?"
I shook my head. "no, I'm a...bounty hunter of sorts. And a settler of sorts as well. What's happened is this...Many of those who have been left here have died, but begun families with mates here, making this their new home. Those families are not a threat to us, but the remaining criminals, they very much are."
"How are they a threat? I mean, you live on another continent, don't you?"
This part saddened me, even to talk about.
"Not any more," I said, "We live here now. That's why we search for those criminals who remain. We wish to settle here, but cannot feel safe to bear children until those who have caused others harm are dispensed of. Our continent is no longer safe. A violent civil war has broken out, led by those who believe that we should not all be free, but that certain races held more rights than others. We donot believe in these things...that bears or wolves or lions should bear more power is absurd to us..."
She smiled, as if my words had struck a chord with her. She was beginning to trust me already, which only made sense, as I was large enough I probably seemed capable of protecting her. As a lion, I often faced an opponent off with mere stares, but here? Who knew when one would attack, and when one would flee. Also, the animal side of many had returned to them, and packs often came to justify the death of one.
"My friends will be here soon," I said, "Let's sleep and talk more in the morning."
She lay back, then sat up again.
"Byron," she said.
"Yes, Ola."
"Are they lions as well? Your friends?"
"My brother, Bavarus is, as are Teshaela and Tehcona, our wives, but the other two are not."
"What type of animal are they? Will they hate me?"
I shook my head, "Chassler is a Cameleon, and Josah is a Porcupine. But don't fear them. Being a friend of mine will make you a friend of theirs..."

Ooc: You forgot one...

Rocky walked into the clearing, holding a pail of water. He was happy to see the girl awake.
Quickly he knelt by her side, "Hi, my name is Rockingham, but everyone calls me Rocky. I'm a friend, at least, I'd like to be. Don't worry, I'm not mean at all."
He took a washcloth, wiping her forehead carefully. He concentrated really hard, staring at the washcloth with determination. His face was in an almost comical fashion.
He stood up, taking a small glass out of his knapsack, and getting her a glass filled with water.
"There you go, that'll make you feel a little better. I know drinking cold water makes me feel better. One time, I had a nasty tummy ache cause I ate some red berries, which Byron keeps telling me not to eat, but they are just so delicious, I can't stop myself sometimes. Anyway, when I ate them and my tummy hurt real bad, but after I had drank some cold water I felt better."
He brought it to her lips, tipping it back a little.
"There you go... oh, dropped a little. Here, let me get that for you," he wiped off the excess water, "We can't have ourselves being messy. The others will be here soon, you'll like them. They are all my friends, and they let me hang around with them sometimes. It's really fun, we get to travel everywhere and help out the good guys and beat up the bad guys."
He stood up, pretending a bad guy was in front of him, and began to box with that invisible foe as if his life depended on it.
"Well," he laughed out loud,"I like doing it. They picked me up in a village a while ago, I was there by myself, and since I wasn't doing anything, I decided to join them. It's been so much fun ever since."
He took the glass from her, taking a drink himself.
"Mmmmm, tastes terrific."
He smiled a child's smile to her, beaming with happiness.

Byron

"They should be here by nightfall," I announced. "Maybe soon after."
THe girl looked to me, smiling.
"I see you've met Rockingham," I said. "Oh, good. You've brought some water. That way we won't have to go after some tongiht, in the dark."
Rockingham had been with us for quite some time. Not really one of us, not family like Bavarus and TeShaela and TehCona, but a good friend, like Graille and Bergandy.
"I think if we..." I smelled it then, a weak scent but getting stronger. I looked around, recognizing it as some sort of fowl. I caught sight of the birdman, actually halfcrow, sweeping down toward us from above. I crouched to strike if it were necessary, but it wasn't. The birdman landed about twenty yards away, feet touching nimbly on the ground, sending into a graceful gait without any pause or regaining of his balance.
I eyed him, then recognized who it was and straightened my stance.
"Byron," he said, his voice a rasp more than a croak. "We must speak..."
I nodded. "Rocky, can you look after our new friend for a few minutes?"

Mageta led his bears through the forest. Something was wrong. They could sense it. They stepped into their village and a roar came from MAgeta's throat, a roar only a bear can make. IT was heard 50 miles away, full of rage and sadness. The village lay in ruins. Some reptilian corpses lay around, but the entirety of the non-warrior bears lay slaughtered. "We shall gather the other noble beasts. Is hall have the Snake King's head for this!" he bellowed to his soldiers, and they turned. First, they would need the help of the Lion King. He only lay about 15 miles away. He would have heard the roar. He would know he situation.

Byron

"What is it, Scrav?" I asked, looking the crowman in the eyes.
"There's news of severa unsavories around, looking or trouble."
"Unsavory?"
"Just thought I'd tell you, given that your brother and women were out there alone. Keep an eye out for them..."
I nodded.
"And Byron...what IS that things?"
"SHe's human," I replied, "Odd little creatures aren't they?"
He studied her, then nodded. He looked me in the eye again, his eyes ice cold...
"I've got toget back...just keep your eyes open, in case."
WIth that, he was off...
I started back, watching the crowman quickly become distant in the darkening sky, then i heard the sound...A bear, a mournful, angry cry if I'd ever heard one.
I glanced toward the girl, wondering if she and Rocky would be alright while I checked on this, then decided to wait and see if anything else happened. No sense risking anything if it wasn't necessary. I didn't have Bavarus around to back me up, and risks were plentiful as it was...

Rocky smiled, sitting next to the woman. His eyes sparkled, as he took another drink of water.
"You have no idea how hot it gets over here. It snows in the winter, and everything gets covered with the snow. I like snow, it's all wet and gooey, and hard."
he smiled, finishing the water.
"You have said much about yourself, is something wrong? I'd hate to think you are uncomfortable here. You know, last time I was feeling down, I made this."
He reached in his large knapsack, bringing out a small doll. It was raggedy, and looked disheveled, you could tell Rocky had made it.
"Here, her name is Sally. She's my special best friend. I hold her sometimes when it's cold and I'm feeling kinda lonely."
He passed it to her, nodding for her to take it.
"Sally helps, somehow she just makes everything feel a little better."
Rocky held onto her hand, "I'm sorry all this happened to you. It can't be that bad though, I mean you're alive, and you don't look hurt."

Byron

When I returned to Ola and Rocky, Ola was holding the doll Rocky had made, looking down at it, understanding but still confused. SHe looked to me.
"I see you two are getting along...Rocky, can i ask a favor of you? I heard a howling sound a few moments ago, and I think I'll go check it out." I had an uneasy feeling about it, but...
"Can you and Ola stay here, near the fire and keep an eye on things?"

They had found some survivors in the outlying woods. They joined the train of warriors and they marched slowly, angrily, letting the rage fester and grow until the only thought on their mids was of tearing free the Snake King's breathing passage.

Rocky stood up, and gave a childlike salute, smiling happily.
"Yeah, me and my friend here are getting to be real good friends. We'll just wait here till you get back."
He turned his attention to the woman now.
"Well, since you're a little shy, I'll just start talking. I like water. In the morning, if it isn't too cold, I like to go swimming. It's so nice, cause the water is cold, and when the sun comes out, you feel so warm and nice. Then, the water gets all warm and you're just wamr all over. You get goosebumps somtimes, since the water is hotter now. It's not really super hot though, just regular warm hot."
He was talking to her, like the terms he was using were common to her.
"I like it best at the night time though. When the waters still warm from the day, and the cool night comes in. Sometimes there's a breeze, sometimes there isn't. Then there's the stars, and you can look down at the water and see the stars just as easily as if you were looking up. Then, and only then do you feel all..."
Rocky closed his mouth, putting another log on the fire. Perhaps conversation wasn't her best point, he knew it wasn't his. Oh well.
Stirring the fire with a stick, he watched in amazement as sparks came out.

Byron

I came across them just a few miles to the South. There was a small train of them, moving slowly to the West. I wondered what was there. Their faces were tightly determined, and their movements slow but calculated, their minds elsewhere. I debated stepping forward then thought better of it. SHould I startled them, the repercussions could be fatal. They were angry, and the bears were known, at least by reputation (whether that reputation was warranted, I didn't know) to be extremely unreasonable when they were angry. I may have been able to fight one of them off (our kinds tended to be fairly equal in battle), but the numbers would end me. No question.
I decided to follow them, thinking it better to get to the basis of this anger, and wanting to be certain that my companions, who should be crossing thier path at any minute, wouldn't run blindly into them, unsuspecting.
I had only followed for a few minutes before I heard the rustling of the tree limbs around me.
I stopped glancing around, hoping that they hadn't seen me following and snuck around behind me. I decided that was most likely what had happened and straightened up, looking around and saying, "I meant you no harm."
Nearby, the lowest branches of an evergreen flew out of the way of a creature slightly smaller than I and it barreled toward me. I turned to it in time to see the tusks bearing down on me. I grabbed one in each paw, being forced onto my back but managing to keep them from piercing my skin.
"You," the creature huffed, "Have interrupted my meal for the last time."
The boar man who had attacked Ola pressed his weight down at me, his companions, five that I could se, but possibly more, were gathering around the two of us.
"Byron? Or Bavarus?" One asked, "Oh, well. Doesn't matter...either will make a good trophy..."
It sneered down at me.
I looked around me, knowing that I could handle two or three of them. Strength and speed wise, I easily outclassed them, but six or more?
I had no choice though. I lifted my rear lags and dug my back claws into thier sides, digging in deep, then held its head back with one paw and thrust the other into the beast's chest, letting out a loud growl and throwing it aside with all four paws.
It landed at the base of a nearby trees, stunned, but unharmed. I leapt to my feet, letting out a roar as the others moved in for the kill. I lashed out at the nearest one, batting at its head with on paw and wondering if I would make it out of this situation alive.

Ola

I liked this creature called "Rocky." He was sweet, childlike and innocent, if these creatures could be innocent. I was also growing to like Byron, although that would take some time. There was something about Byron that was hard to get past. He was almost too mature, like the world was too serious to take anything lightly. Rocky, on the other hand, was sweet, seemed to like even the most minute things, like water, which he talked about fervently for a few minutes before falling silent.
"Um..." I began, not sure what to say, "Tell me more...about anything you like..."
Before he even had a chance to reply, a loud roar echoed toward us from the woods to the South. I stood up and looked around.
It was a lion's roar.

OOC: Rockingham, what type of creature is Rocky? Lion? Bear? Raccoon? You may have stated it somewhere, but I must have missed it in my rereading...

Bavarus

TehCona and TeShaela had been joking merrily as always when we came across the ruined village. We were a few miles off our intended route after a signs of a Snake nesting to the Southwest. We'd adjusted, hoping to make it home in about the same time without a confrontation. Normally, I'm itching for battle, but with the ladies here, and without big brother to ensure a victory, I'd grown a little weary.
The area ahead of us was scattered with bodies, those of both Snake and Bear alike. I should have smelled the death as we approached. Now what to do? A battle had occurred, and I knew this to be the location of a bear village, which meant the Snakes had attacked.
I held my breath, sniffing the air for anything abnormal.
"We have to go arouhd, and carefully," I explained.
The others nodded, and we started around, creeping through the trees. Once on the other side, I took in a long deep breath and started to relax a little. THen I heard it, the roar of a lion in battle...an all too familiar roar.
"Burgandy, get the girls to camp..." I said, starting off in the direction of the roar.
"No," TeShaela said, "That's Byron, and I'm coming with you."
No time to argue, so we all went, with me in the lead. In seconds, the three of us (TehCona, TeShaela and me--the lions) were on all fours, moving full speed toward the sound.
Graille was on all fours as well, hopping into the trees around us, moving from branch to branch, as his kind did, his skin immediately becoming greenish brown to match the leaves and trunks of the trees.
A few seconds later, Burgandy passed us up, moving quickly on nimble feet...
I thought about the bear village and hoped that Byron hadn't gotten caught up in the situation somehow...

Byron

The battle was a losing one...I was keeping them at bay well enough, but not doing any real damage. I'd knock them back in enough time to fend against the next attack, but the'd be back up in time to take their turn again. I wondered how long until my stamina failed me? Two hours? Three? If they didn't find a way through my defenses by then. I swatted one down, turned to swipe at another, then I saw Burgandy sprinting toward me, his slender Ferret's body coming low to the ground and moving at an immense speed. He was on the back of one of the Boars in a second, tearing into its flesh with razor sharp teeth, clawing at its side to keep from being thrown off.
I threw one to the ground, then turned to another, thinking that with two of us, while we can't win, we may stand a better chance at escape. Problem was, Burgandy would often fight only one, making sure to end him before moving on. With his concentration centered as such, it was often hard to ensure his safety, especially in fights such as this one.
I was temporarily renewed with this help, and more aggressive with the added determination of keeping not only myself but also a close friend safe from the enemy. I drove forward then, grabbing two of them by the throats and slamming thier heads together.
Bavarus came into view then, his eyes wild, wide with ferocity in the manner in which I'd only seen in his.
Now, the battle had truly begun.

Ooc:Rocky is a half kangaroo. Hance the knapsack he keeps pulling everything out of. I know only male's have it, but it seemed stupid to have a kangaroo and have no pouch to go with it.

Rocky smiled, she was a nice lady. No one had ever wanted him to talk before, and about anything. This was so incredible, like having an actual friend.
He sat, and looked up, thinking as best he could. What was there to talk about? Nothing seemed to pop up in his head. Then, a flash of red caught his eyes. He looked in the woman's arms and saw Sally.
"Sally!" he nearly exlaimed, reaching over to touch her, he didn't take her away from the nice lady though.
"I can talk about Sally! She's my friend that helps me when times aren't as good. I made her a long time ago, when I was still a kid. I didn't have any friends, so I made one, and her name was Sally. She's such a strong and pretty girl. I made her that way."
He took out another doll, this one a man, that looked similiar to Sally.
"This one is named Craig. He's my friend too, but him and Sally are boyfriend and girlfriend. They dance and kiss and do all that mushy stuff," he giggled, placing Craig next to Sally.
"Sometimes Sally gets mad at Craig, but they always go back together. I take Craig out whenever I'm feeling scared, he makes all the scared go away."
His eyes lit up, "What do you do when you get scared?"
Far off in the distance, something howled.

Ola

I stood up, looking around.
"Rocky, what was that?" I asked him. I slid closer to him, "What the hell was that?"

Byron

It was a different story with the tables turned. Once Bavarus was close enough, he dove at one of them, tackling it and pinning it down, swatting it in the face a few times quickly, then turning to face one that advanced on him. Three on six, that was more like it...but wait...TeShaela came running towards us as well, TehCona close behind her. I would have preferred the girls stay out of this, but they did as they pleased. I couldn't argue with them. THey double-teams the first one they came across, one clamping its teeth in one side while the others clawed at its back. It fell over onto its other side and wailed out in pain.
Bavarus was handling two, the girls one and Bergundy one, that left two for me.
Just as I sized the enemy up, one charged me, his tusks facing out as the very first had done. I grabbed this one's tusks and rolled backward, tossing him over top of me and sending him into the lower limbs of a nearby tree. As I got to my feet, the other reached out for me with one arm and grabbed at my mane. I swatted him away in one quick movement.
Bavarus had chased one of his off, but the other charged him from behind, Bavarus appearing unaware of what was happening. I was too far away, so I yelled, "Bavarus, behind you!"
As he tunred, the trees to his right seemed to come alive, moving toward the creature with increasing speed. It stopped, staring at the sight with wide eyes. Graille slowly materialized before us, his claw gripping the Boar by the head and tossing it aside with a quick motion.
The Boar retreated then, the one still staring back at Graille, eventhough he'd taken to his natural form. The Cameleon-man smiled back at it with satisfaction.
I surveyed my companions...not a scratch by the looks of it, with me as an exception, and I'd barely taken that.
"Come, let's go back to camp...there's someone I want you all to meet," I explained.

"No.. no no no," he quickly moved over to her, holding her tightly in his arms.
"It's ok, it's perfectly all right. That was just an owl," he rocked her back and forth, looking in to the night.
"It's just an owl, a little harmless owl, who just wanted to say hi. He is a friendly owl, just like Sally, sometimes he'll pop out at night to say hi and make sure everything's all right. That's how you know things are all right, when an owl says hello."
He glanced into the fire, sighing deeply as he held onto her. Nothing would hurt her, he would make sure of that. She seemed to pretty to be hurt.
"Let me sing you a little lullaby. It was something that made me go to sleep all the time. Come on... shhh, just listen and relax.

"A way up far in the greenwood tree,
Apart from living with you and me.
Lives a small Frump with wings like a bee,
Who comes down and plays in the sea.

Come Loo, Come Lei, Come what do you say.
Away upon the greenwood tree.
Come Loo Come Lei Come with her today.
Away from the greenwood tree.

Her wings come fluttering passed with glee,
She can't help living the life you see.
With all of the love in her little pinky,
It makes everyone laugh even you and me.

Come Loo, Come Lei, Come what do you say.
Away opon the greenwood tree.
Come Loo Come Lei, Come with her today.
Away from the greenwood tree.
"

He kept rocking her back and forth as he sung, to make sure the noises from the far off battle were drowned out. When he was certain everything was finished, he stopped. Silence was upon them. Rocky smiled, there, she was safe.
They'd be back soon, just like always.

Rocky was sweet, singing to me to help me calm down, but I could distantly hear noises between voices. What was going on? What have I gotten myself into?
As he finished the song, I held tightly to him, ot wanting to let go. He felt so warm and safe.
After about ten minutes, i saw movement to my right. i glanced over, seeing a large Ferret-like creature standing near the fire on the opposite side, still on all fours.
"What the...? Rocky?" I stammered, starting to back away.
The Ferret-thing looked back, just as confused as I was it seemed.
"What is that?" I pointed at it, wanting Rocky to chase it off.
"That...is Burgandy."
Byron's voice, from in the darkness.
"Byron?" I asked, still shaken by the ferret creature's presence.
He stepped into the light a few moments later, one arm around the shoulders of a pretty she-lion. Another lionman followed, this one just over six feet, almost a half-foot shorter than Byron, with another she-lion, this one very similar to the first, but with her mane hanging down in long braids. A lizard-like creature moved between the two couples.
"Ola," Byron began, "This is TeShaela, and these two are Bavarus, my brother, and TehCona, TeShaela's sister and Bavarus' wife."
I was uncertain of what to do next, so I stepped closer to Rocky again.
"And this is Graille," Byron added, pointing to the lizard thing.
It looked back at me, then changed suddenly, its green skin blending together, changing color, until I stood before me, staring back. I smiled at me, then swirled away as quickly as I had come. The lizard-thing was back then.
"Graille is a chameleon..." Bavarus explained.

Mageta heard a roar but ignored it. A few hours later they marched into the lion village and saw the lions and another creature, a strange one, clustered together. "Hail!" growled Mageta low, sword resting on his shoulder.

"No, it's ok," he said, getting the hair from out of her face, "These people are all friends. They are the ones who defeat the bad guys and save the day, just like superheros."
He smiled, looking at them all.
"I'm a superhero too, I stayed here and made sure no one hurt her. There was some hollering and screaming, but I didn't let anything come near to hurt her. I'm a hero right, like you guys now?"
He had always watched them go into battle, and he wasn't able too. Rocky had never been good at fighting, but he wanted to help so bad. He had always wanted to help. Helping was so much fun.
"I did good, right?"
Something scracked in the fire, and a huge spray of sparks rose into the cool night air.

Byron

"Yes, Rocky, you've done very well. We're all proud of you," I said, smiling to him. Rocky was, if nothing else, reliable to a fault. I had to respect that.
"Now, why don't we..." I smelled it then, too close it seemed, for me to have overlooked it. I stood to my full height, judging the pattern of the wind. They came into view then, a line of them, Bears.
THe hair stood up on the back of my neck, but I stayed calm. if they had no quarrel with us, we'd have none with them.
"Hail!" Shouted one. One its shoulder rested a sword.
Ola jumped when he shouted. Apparently, humans do not have sharp senses, she'd had no idea they were coming. I glanced over to Bavarus, who stood on guard, holding himself still, still driven by battle.
"Hello," I replied, speaking loudly but trying to keep my voice even, wanting to sound unaffected by the sudden tension that had thickened the air.
"What brings you this way on this fine evening?"
