Ola looked down through the trees at the beast below. It paced back and forth, its nose sniffing the air for her scent. She tried to be still, to hold her breath, or at least calm it, hoping the beast wouldn't hear or see her, praying the wind would pick up and carry her scent away...
It stopped, raising its nose a little. It had her found her, would know her exact location in mere seconds, and when it realized where she was, she was as good as dead.
The creature stood perfectly still, its fur raising as it grew more intent, its long hog-like nose pointing toward the moon above. The tusks reflected the moon's light, making the white ivory sparkle. ANd still, all those boar's features, and it stood on two feet like a man.
It growled beneath its breath, looking around, having lost her scent again in a light breeze.
She had to get away from it, had to jump down and run the opposite way, hoping to get a head start.
She moved slowly out onto a branch, watching the beast below, then leaned forward, the boar man-beast standing below.
She took in a deep breath, then jumped...
When she hit the ground, her legs conpressed against her body, sending shockwaves of pain and discomfort through her legs and hips and back. She ignored them, hurriedly getting to her feet and starting away at a stumble. Withing seconds, she was moving at a sprint, hearing the beast's hooves pound on the ground behind her, quickly becoming closer. She wondered how long before it caught up to her, hoping it would finally tired from the chase and knowing it wouldn't.
She'd come North not knowing what she would find. A child of only fourteen alone in the vast Wilderness that was Althernargn, "the untamed land." There were stories of what was here, half-human beasts that were neither man nor animal , both man and animal. How could she have believed them.
But her father had been both man and animal, a man who beat his wife and an animal who tried to rape his daughter. She'd fled, hoping to find peace here.
Instead, she found the beasts, or rather they had found her. And they apparently intended to make a meal of her.
She ran in a straight line, afraid that if she changed direction, it would slow her too much.
Ahead, the trees gave way to a clearing, where the ground was mostly dirt. She could distantly hear a stream.
Its pants were all she focused on though, deep breaths getting closer by the second.
She focused on the clearing, wondering if someone might be there, her eyes locked straight ahead instead of on her feet where they belonged.
her ankles struck a fallen limba dn she sprawled forward, grping for the ground in front of her. SHe landed hard, rolling onto her back and raising her arms as if they would fend the beast off on their own.
The boar manbeast leapt into the air, falling toward her with wide eyes and an open mouth.
A second later, it was gone, draw from the air infront of her, snatched off to the side.
SHe followed its movement, seing a dark figure towering above the beast, which still stood on its two hind legs. THe figure drew back and struck the boar manbeast, causing it to whine as only a member of the pig family can, and sent it squealing into the night the way it came.
Her head felt heavy then, and the world swam before her eyes and was gone.
