Definitely not a sole cause, but I truly believe that if puts many men on that path assuming that the lack of sex is the wife’s choice and not their own. I have chatted with too many who relayed this almost identical journey to be coincidence, unprompted. I ask how they came to develop the desire and this is very often the common arc.
As for the wives, if it’s the husband refusing the sex, then it’s possible but still unlikely IMO.

I believe both. Women are more likely to experiment before settling down for marriage because it’s more socially acceptable.
I also believe a sizeable portion of “straight” men who have had a gay experience wouldn’t admit to it, and fewer still who desire it would admit to wanting it.
One only needs look at personals sections for casual sex. Male seeking male is by far the most popular. Openly gay men are less likely to be advertising there because they can find it at gay bars or other such spots, without needing to post ads. They would be more likely to seek out long term relationships there.
Most ads in the M2M casual sex section are men who live a straight life and want discreet hookups.
It will sadly never be as acceptable for men to admit to bi desires, acted out or not. Even in a confidential study, I guarantee some men would still lie, at the very least because they struggle to admit it even to themselves.
