I don't care for Europe, I do resent being broke the rest of my adult life because I have a bowel disease I didn't do anything to incur, where in a civilized world I would not be. I have no fancy car, house, or vacations or bad choices in my past, other than maybe an education I had just paid off.

I was listening to an NPR bit where people tell their own stories recently. This was a girl in the foster care system about to turn 21. She did not have a job, and she'd gotten pregnant but miscarried. Unless she gets a job she's going to have to live in a shelter. These girls get pregnant for a total no-brainer reason - it's the one sure-fire way to experience love. At least for a time. So then another baby - it's no mystery.

She was in the system because when she was 8, her father murdered her mother. The sibs were all put in different homes, she lived in a whole bunch of different ones, most of them roach infested and with 3 or 4 other kids, one of her foster sisters at the time of recording was 16 and pregnant. One of the biological sisters has a job and one baby and seems to be able to look ahead and manage, and the recording was peppered with bits of her totally good advice to the girl making the piece. She talked about how her older sister was able to look forward, but it wasn't as easy for her. It's a question of personalities, and how old the older girl was at the time of the murder and how young the younger was.

The person doing the bit isn't as "over it." I doubt strongly that any kind of counseling was ever done for these people. I don't think I'd be that equipped for the corporate world at 21 if this was my background.

You take me and this 21 year old and say to both of us "ok, make something of yourself." And call this a reasonable expectation and an equal scenario?

If it's socialist to assume that people in these situations are as worthwhile as humans, as potentially talented, as thoughtful, as *good* as I am, fine. Send me to Denmark. I wasn't aware that our mandate as a country involved awesome ubermenschen and disposable untermenschen.

The fact is, if you have adequate social welfare, there WILL be people who don't need help but work the system. There will always be people at the top and bottom of the food chain who have no character, but we're only focused on ONE half of that in this culture.
