Is War Brewing in the Pacific?

David Archibald writes:

"China has recently been attempting to have the U.S. sign onto a Fourth Communique under which the U.S. would no longer consider Taiwan as an ally or deal with it in any military or diplomatic terms. In effect, the U.S. would peacefully decline and leave the Western Pacific to China. The White House rejected it prior to the meeting of the U.S. and Chinese presidents on April 6-7 at Mar-a-Lago. It was raised again by Henry Kissinger, now in the pay of the Chinese government, at his meeting with President Trump on May 10.

"It has been said that President Xi wants the Fourth Communique to crown his consolidation of power at the national congress of Communist Party of China in autumn this year. But he is likely indifferent. If the U.S. could be talked into abandoning the Western Pacific and all its allies in Asia, that would be a bonus. It is more likely that he is making a casus belli for the war that he wants and thus head off intra-party criticism for military adventurism with its attendant horrors. China expects to win a short, sharp, glorious war.

"China, the U.S., Japan and Vietnam are all expecting war. China may have claimed all of the South China Sea but Vietnam still has 17 island bases there. These are a major long-term embarrassment to China. Vietnam will not give them up voluntarily so China will attempt to remove them by force – thus the current buildup of China’s amphibious warfare capability. China would also attack Vietnam along their land border to put maximum pressure on Hanoi."

I noticed that such threads (about European or Asian politics) get poor traction on the GB.
Figures, with such an overwhelmingly American audience.

Until lately.
Many thanks to Mr. Putin and "the Ruskis are coming" electoral panic, for making Europe relevant again. ;)

We had an armada off the coast of Korea. The Carl Vinson group has left the area. I'm not hearing a thing about any further build up of American force in the region. If it is happening it's happening quietly. It seems we're inching pretty close to a strike on the Norks but I'm not reading much about the movement of F-22s, B-2s, or new naval forces into the region. How about you?

We can't do a damned thing except crackdown on China economically.

The problem is that they are sitting on a huge debt bubble, and if we do that we could trigger a global economic meltdown that might lead to a bigger war.

What is going to happen is that we will bunker in place while Japan becomes the Israel of the far east, and their debt bubble is nothing to laugh at either.

China does not want another wave of Nork refugees and seems to be willing to start a war with us over the issue. Anything we do could also have massive dire consequences to South Korea.

So we wait placidly for another Pearl Harbor here at home and entrust our national security to the Chinese? I don't think so.

If the United States really wanted to piss China off and shock the world, they could recognize Taiwan as a country and suggest the rest of the world do the same.

I'm still trying to understand how Taiwan can be viewed as a "breakaway providence", self-governing, and still be considered part of "one fucking China".

China may be dumb enough to try to take the island back by "force", but I'm sure they aren't dumb enough to think they can fight off an entire group of countries that would be willing to recognize Taiwan.

Warmongering? Yes, but I say - call China's bluff on Taiwan. 👠👠👠Kant🌹

Remember the invasion of Iraq?

In the event of any war, with the current state of our nation, it would be a two-front war, so yeah, it's going to take the loss of Los Angeles before the Left would ever enlist in any fight. The only pressure we have is economic and if we get too harsh, China will start sending aid through back-door channels to keep the regime in place and the North Koreans in North Korea instead of flooding China with refugees. Despite all of their bluster, the Chinese are pretty much bankrupt and the government is hanging on by its fingernails.

I sure do. I recall you and the Vettebigot enjoying it tremendously. It gave you an excuse to question the patriotism of anyone who disagreed with any of Bush's policies.

Don't forget that it gave birth to the Liberal Terrorist Chica!

The Red Chinese got their asses kicked when they tried messing with Taiwan in the 50s.

We won't sell Taiwan anything but antiquated military technology in order not to anger China which has developed pretty good technology by buying it or stealing it.

Advantage, China.
