A Kingfisher airplane from WWII and before. Typically used for reconnaissance but they also carried small bombs in case they saw an enemy submarine. Usually carried aboard US Navy and some Royal Navy ships and launched from a rail that was in the rear of the ship. Recovered from the sea after landing by a crane that was on the deck of the ship.

However, several were lost at sea due to high seas which prevented them from being recovered once they landed at sea or were sunk by high waves.
