Jen's NaNoWriMo thread

Random question on the side - If I want to have the meaning

"the servants of the Duchess"

would

"the Duchess' servants"

be correct? Is there another s after the apostrophe? I'm suddenly unsure.
Can't help with the apostrophe. I rely heavily on my better half to attend to the little buggers - which is particularly annoying as her first language in not English.

Heh :) Same here actually. S gets very annoyed with himself every time I catch an error he makes, yet it happens all the time. Ah well, I'll just leave it and hope my editor catches it if it's wrong.

Looking at the way I'm butchering everything due to the fast pace, I think I'll need like three or four editors to make it presentable.

ok back to my own writing now
;)
Thanks! I appreciate the encouragement.

I'm writing the wedding scene now. I skipped ahead by writing something akin to: "They rode for three days. It was boring." :D

What the hell would the prince wear for the wedding? It is wartime, they're in the middle of nowhere, but he did know he'd be getting married before he packed.

S is telling me that he might be wearing a ceremonial, decorated breastplate. Yes? No? What the hell else might he be wearing with it?

Help? I'm stuck until I figure this one out.

I know technically I could make him wear whatever the hell I want, but I just don't know. Hence the question.

If the word ends with an 's' and requires an apostrophe like in your example, then the second 's' is not written.

Thank you.

Oh goodness, the first sex scene. It's going to slow down my progress considerably.

8,750.

I'm moving at absolute snail's pace, but I guess it's better than nothing. If I get to 10k, I'm caught up for the time being.

*grumbles*

why dont you make it interesting - he packed for the wedding but all his bags were lost somehow - he has to make do

local traditional garb

mud splattered blood stained but he drags himself to the alter

he borrows a clean uniform from a loyal retainer and is then mistaken for a commoner

i recon this could lead to all kinds of scenarios - cool!

Hee :D I like the mud splattered blood stained one the best.

Sadly though, they're nowhere where there would be any traditional garb. They're at some Duke's castle. And there can't be any kind of humor in the situation, because the whole deal needs to be as tense and formal as possible. My main character is supposed to be dead scared before the wedding night, and funny just doesn't work for that at all.

I know, I know, I'm boring.

Well I beat the 9k. That's something.

And I think I might actually be writing something like a hot sex scene. At least I hope so.

I’ve been writing one for ages where the family deliberately poisons the girl so she doesn’t have to get married (poison that fakes death etc), but they can’t have anybody know about it so the family sorcerer wipes all their minds the night before - yadda yadda yadda - girl is faking death, conscious but can’t move, family is all genuinely distraught - works pretty well actually

Interesting. It sounds a bit Romeo and Juliet, only the opposite. :)

I like the idea of a family sorcerer. Is it kind of like the family cookie recipe? :D

its not the least bit like romeo and juliet - the girl is an idiot and puts her whole family in danger by impulsivly agreeing to marry the bad guy -being dead is the only way she'll survive.

family sorcerer is probably the wrong description - he's more like a loved uncle with some weird hobbies :D

Oh. Well then. Not so much R&J.

Does it have any kind of love story elements? Just curious. :)

I'm not used to writing things such as "center of her lust". :D But "pussy" just doesn't fit.

very much a love story - she has to grow up fast because of what she's done, learn life lessons etc - she meets the good guy in her quest to be able to return to her family but its a long road to the happy ending

Yay :) It probably would have been pretty cool otherwise, but I like love stories the most :)

center of her lust...? :D

roflol
Yeah, exactly.

I tell ya, I'm, very much hoping this will all get thrown out in the editing process. But I just don't have the time right now to contemplate endlessly about which word to use, cause I'll never get anywhere that way. So I'd rather use this and crack myself up while writing.

I read a story once that was written entirely in those flowery euphemisms - it was hilarious (but I’m not sure if it was meant to be...)

I'm very much hoping mine won't end up that way.

It's just difficult when I have an elf and a prince, because the words "pussy" and "cock" somehow don't fit into the story at all. I'm not a fan of "her slick dewy gate" or "his throbbing love rod" or such, but I gotta use something (and no, I didn't use these particular ones :D ).

it is difficult - could you do without either? describe in sensations instead of euphemisms

I try to do that as much as I can, but I'm not always able to do it. I dunno. It's really tough.

I try not to worry too much about it right now, since there's always editing.
