Personally, both work for me. I love slow burn, especially slow burn spanning multiple chapters and let it build up to the main sex scene that's usually long and drawn out with lots of detail. I see it as a reward for those who dedicated their time reading through my story.

But obviously, not every story is going to be like that and especially standalone stories are usually better off as jerker stories. It doesn't need to be "let's get to business" right away, but rather have both gradual build up and then the reward at the end, without wasting too much time.

For me, if what I'm writing is erotica then sex is probably the point. The climax is going to be... a climax. I'm going to have fun writing it and draw it out and try to make it intense. And if someone's looking for a certain kind of enjoyment in their reading then they'll be able to find it there.

But they might have to wait for a bit. As Voboy said the payoff is a better payoff if you know the characters, if there's some tension to be relieved.

I don't skimp on trying to write well and trying to write good characters just because they're gonna get messy in the end.

Nah, there's far too many orgasms involved to edge to.

I don't have many likes in my stories but I have noticed that readers commonly like the most short jerkers. Second chapter is often too much. The longer and less fucking involving stories are not that popular. Those I enjoy more to write. Sometimes I think for whom I write? With the amount of reactions I would say that mostly I write for myself. It is therapeutic. I don't get payed from writing so I don't own anything to anyone.

I also like to read others stories. There is quite a lot very nice stories to read. If some story isn't for me it is not the writers fault. It is just that our interests does not meet. I move on and don't write here or elsewhere that one should write differently.

Please understand that it's a fairly regular occurrence for writers of what the OP described as "jerkers" to make statements dismissive of stories that are meant to offer something more. I have no issue with others writing stories that are not of interest to me, I hope they do well with their target audience. I would hope to get the same respect in return.

I think telling other people how to write is sinful.

Some would say that a longer build up can deliver a hotter sex scene.

But some just want jerkers and that's fine, providing they're not dissing other styles of story.

I try to write the story about why the characters are having sex the way they are.

In my latest story, the sex scenes were a very small part of the story, and each detailed sex scene was done with a purpose to bring out a character's attribute. The first sex scene was detailed to show the MFC as being in charge of herself and her agency. "This is my show, baby. We do it my way, or I bite!"

Later when they do go to her place, I abbreviated the sex with "We had sex ... with condoms. And after a marathon session, we were lying beside each other." At that point there was no need to go into details.

I write for myself and to get my fantasies out. I have aphantasia and zero visual imagination--writing lets me "see" my fantasies finally. I only care for the sex, the action and if other people like it, that's a bonus. In my almost 20 years of writing, it's almost all been strokers.

I tend to try and have buildup and backstop, a little character development if I can.

I do write the sex with the goal of getting people's engines going, but I think if all I did was write sex scenes I'd burn out way faster.

An intriguing (well to me anyway) question came to me as I was reading some material here. Do you prefer writing "Jerkers" i.e. very short, straight down to business, wam-bam thank you ma'am stories or do you prefer something with more substance and , dare I say "body" to flow from your keyboards?

When you sit down to compose, from an idea, is your focus mainly on the story or the sex knowing what audience and venue you're writing for?

As I've become more experienced in my writing, I definitely focus on the story around the sex. Thqat might not be true for all of us, nor do I feel like my way is THE way, but the story is my focus now. It's the circumstances and the emotional content that get me interested in the writing. I've written enough sex scenes that I feel like I can just pound one out when I need to , so my focus is more on what leads to that point.

I definitely prefer this. But by "substance," and "body," I mean vivid language that "Help(s) the reader to understand what the characters are sensing." (Thanks to @HordHolm). In other words, the story can't be just a list of sexual events.

By "substance" and "body" I don't mean "focus on the story" as opposed to "the sex." I think sex is a powerful enough human experience that it deserves it's own genre, all by itself.
