judicial slavery ideas

I'm working on a story with this concept. It takes a lot of suspension of disbelief, but it's fun. A woman who is a high-powered banking executive travels to a Pacific island country ruled by a "sultan" who is the absolute ruler of his island, for the purpose of negotiating a lucrative transaction, and she knowingly violates the law of the country, as a result of which for a year she must serve as a slave and member of his harem. She is caught between the desire to be independent and to escape and the almost irresistible pleasure offered by the term of her slavery to the sultan, who, of course, is handsome, urbane, well-educated, and incredibly appealing, despite being an absolute ruler.

If you're interested in ideas that play on this concept, do some searching. You'll find plenty of stories.
Whether the Pacific or South China Sea, here is something I saw: about Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei

Not sure if he fits your Sultan image, but a former Penthouse Pet joined the harem. It wasn't slavery, these women earned a good bit ($20k/week) and one woman wrote a memoir about it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Some_Girls:_My_Life_in_a_Harem

Kim Jong Un also is reported to have something like a harem, though there's not much to admire about him.

Unless you are committed to an Asian setting, you could consider a historical erotic fiction plot. A number of Islamic rulers, and pre-Islamic rulers going back to ancient times had some version of a harem.

Of course, the ancient world would not have your high-powered female executive, so back to Brunei, she could willingly join the Brunei style harem despite the pay cut.

Thanks for the info and the links.

I'm not concerned about my story being based on an actual precedent. It will be fictional, and the country in which it's set and the sultan who rules it completely made up. I definitely want it to have a modern-day setting.

The East Indies makes sense to me as the most plausible location for the kind of country and ruler I'm thinking of.

Study Russia, China, N.Korea etc...

... although I suspect that the "judicial" part there is mostly for show...
America, too.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Enter prisoners being put to work as wage-slaves for a few cents an hour.

Course, while that’s judicial slavery in the most literal term, it isn’t exactly…sexy.

The difference being, as I stated, that generally in the US the legal system is not run with the aim of keeping a gang of thugs in power and in the luxury living conditions which they have stolen for themselves...

I could see something along those lines of a special programme for first offenders. The proposal is that you are able to keep a clean record but must adhere to the 'needs' of the programme. Depending on the specific talents available, a whole set of tasks can be requested to be fulfilled.

Charlemagne comes immediately to mind.

Martin Luther condoned one of his allied dukes having two wives, and polygamist Christian sects have come in and out of fashion repeatedly before Smith and Friends made a big splash with it.

Maybe an alternate history where the Batenburgers come in vogue?
