It's a collegiate term. Those are the mascots or whatever for said colleges. Ohio State Buckeyes and Indiana Hoosiers

When out of state people would greet an Indianan, the Indianan would say "Who's there?", but it sounded like "Hoosier" - this happened so often and so repeatedly to out-of-staters that it became the nickname for people from Indiana.
