The word liminal technically refers to being perched on a sensory threshold. Anthropologically speaking, its a state of suspended existence where normal societal rules don't always apply (re: Victor Turner's The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure. Attributes of a person in liminality would be an ambiguous position, being indeterminate.... like in the womb, formed but not yet born. Does that help?
