On the eve of what NBC News is calling Democrats’ “biggest 2018 primary test,” the party’s second-in-command is throwing in the towel.
DNC Deputy Chair Keith Ellison is set to announce that he will leave the DNC and Congress to run for attorney general in Minnesota. Ellison is reportedly sick of Chair Tom Perez and frustrated with being in the minority in Congress, which begs the question: Does Ellison have strong doubts about Democrats’ ability to take back the House this fall?
Reminder: The party remains bitterly divided, and Democrats have still not agreed on reforms to their nominating process following their primary fiasco in 2016. Without Ellison, will progressive activists and Bernie Sanders supporters feel they’ve lost a seat at the table and cause even more headaches for Perez and the party establishment?
