Knowledge and Seclusion

Kanya lost herself in his eyes as the tears streamed down her cheeks. His lips took hers and she responded returning the kiss with a new life of its own. Her arms wrapping around him, clinging to him as if she were afraid he would leave. Her heart beat madly as a new sensation over came her. She didn't hate him she was in love with him, and even if this moment only lasted for now, even if he put her in a room an through away the key she wouldn't care. She would always have this moment, and never wanted to be parted from him again.

As he broke the kiss and looked into her eyes searching or preparing for her to chastise him once more, she merely brought her lips to his again kissing him with all that she felt at that moment.

Darian felt everything inside him explode with that second kiss. It was with that kiss that he could tell that she loved him and he kissed her back, wrapping his arms around her waist, holding her close. So that was what that feeling had been all this time, it was that he loved her. He wanted nothing more at that moment than to just kiss her continuously, revelling in the feel of her lips against his, her heart beating madly in time with his. He had been afriad that she would chastise him or reject him after he kissed her the first time, but she merely kissed him again, this time with more feeling and emotion involved. Darian didn't think any more, he just lost himself in the feeling of the kiss and her warm body next to his
Darian brought a single hand up from her waist to run through her hair, using it as an excuse not to break the kiss.

Kanya couldn't tell how long they stood there their lips locked in a fire of pent up emotion. His hand gently stroking her hair as their bodies stayed pressed together. There was no denying any longer what she felt for him. Although it was hard for her to rationalize it, for the first time she did not. Eventually their lips parted and she was breathless, her knees weak as he held her to him. Her eyes searched his seeing the same admiration and feelings she'd been running away from.

She wanted to tell him that she would marry him if he asked but she wanted him to make the decision on his own. She was certain his intention would to be never parted from her as hers was the same. "my feelings and affections" she said softly as she looked into his eyes "they are equal to yours, i will not deny them any longer. You have my word."her breath was finally returning to her. She finally figured out that she was in love with him.

Darian smiled at her admittance to her feelings. His mind was clearing now, putting events into their places as the seconds ticked by. He took a deep breath, his body still close to hers, his heart beating in time with hers like it would stop if they parted. Looking down at her he kissed each of her eyelids, causing her to close them as he did so.

"Keep them closed my lady for I have something to give you. And no peeking!" Darian said with a mock seriousness in his tone. Reaching into his pocket he withdrew a small box that he had went to purchase earlier today. This was the reason he hadn't been present at dinner, for her father had kept him too long with papers and details. He held the box at her eye level and opened it before telling her to open her eyes. Inside the box, displayed beautifully there, was a silver necklace inlaid with three small but deep green emeralds.

"This is so you can remember me Kanya, even when I am busy with your father or other things. I never want to part from you ever again, but for the times that I must, loathe them that I do, I hope these will help you to remember me." Darian spoke softly, his voice finally returning after that kiss.

Kanya kept her eyes closed as he had asked. The warmth of his lips causing her lids to tingle as her lips still did. When he told her to open them she did, "it's beautiful Lor..Darian"she said softly "thank you, i shall treasure it always and never remove it from my person." He eyes moved from the box to his. It would remind her of his eyes. "will you place it on me" she asked softly as she lifted her hair. His fingers lightly grazed her neck as he placed the precious necklace upon her. The jewels sitting right in the crook of her neck.

"i'm sorry that i yelled at you" she said softly. Having never apologized for anything, she wasn't quite sure that was how it should sound. Her eyes looked down for a moment ashamed for the first time of her behavior. He would be the only one to ever get such a reaction from her. For it wouldn't be as if she'd be apologizing in the near future to anyone for anything else.

Darian enjoyed the feeling of his fingers on the back of her neck, for it sent a tingling sensation through his arm and into his body. He admired how the emeralds sparkled in the moonlight against her skin and then he looked into her eyes. As he went to look in her eyes, she dropped them towards the ground as she apologized for her actions earlier. He shook his head gently and took her chin in his hand, tilting her head up to look at him.

"You have no need to apologize Kanya. You were frustrated with me I understand, just talk to me next time. Don't yell, for it distorts that wonderful voice of yours." He teased her with a wink and gave her another brief kiss, scared that if he kissed her too much he would become lost in her. He took her hand and looked out over the lake as he mused the recent events.

His light kissed teased her, she smiled as they talked and walked. Eventually going back to the house. True to her word she didn't take the necklace off when she slept, and arrived at breakfast with it on. Her father and Darian had gone off again. She sulked and pouted most the day. A bouquet of flowers and a letter of intent arrived from Lord Riley. It seemed he hadn't been discouraged as much as she'd hoped. He had written a request for permission to call upon her.

Kanya swiftly replied that she was being courted by another and appreciated the gift, but it could not be accepted. She had the flowers returned to him with the note and her own reply.

She made a note to advise Darian of it when he returned. Having him at dinner was a relief. The necklace remained upon her neck even then, her mother made the remark that it was to fine to be worn for a casual meal and she should take it off. Kanya replied simply "Not only will i not take it off for dinner, but i shan't ever take it off" Her mother scoffed at her, Kanya looked up at Darian who seemed to be smiling over the ordeal. When their eyes met it was like two love sick puppies. Her father noticed and smiled but said nothing.

Darian had a hard time concentrating the entire day. His thoughts kept returning to the kiss they had shared the night previous. He did his paperwork and discussed random scientific and political things with Kanya's father trying to pass the time until dinner when he would see her again. Sitting at dinner he kept glancing at her, catching her eyes and smiling at the shared moment they had had last night. Kanya's father caught their stares a couple times and chuckled a bit, knowing how they felt about each other.

It was at this time that Kanya's mother made the announcement of another ball coming up and Darian alighted at the prospect of being able to dance with Kanya again and be close to her in public. Though the midnight trysts were very enjoyable he wanted everyone to know how much he loved and cared about her.

Kanya and Darian spent the night by the fireplace as he read to her from the werewolves book again. As soon as the opportunity presented itself they were out the side door taking a long midnight stroll in the woods.

"So tell me" she said softly "where were you born?, who was your first love?, Which do you prefer swords or jousting?, Will you tell my mother that you are to have all the dances?" She smiled at him as she bombarded him with questions laughing slightly as he looked perplexed as to where to begin.

"oh i meant to tell you, it seems Lord Riley wasn't as discouraged as i had hoped he sent me flowers today with the request to call upon me." she sighed softly "I thanked him, returned the flowers the cards and a note advising him I was currently being courted by another."

Darian stammered a bit as he tried to answer each question in turn but was only bombarded by another before he could begin. He leaned down and kisses her deeply, using it both as an excuse to keep her quiet so he could answer and as an excuse to feel her lips against his again.

"I was born in Naples, Italy, my first love was a girl named Elizabeth, I prefer swords to jousting and I will claim you for every dance even if your mother has plans otherwise." Darian hurriedly answered while she was occupied with catching her breath again. He smiled at her and ran his hand over her head again, enjoying the feeling of his fingers through her hair. He frowned slightly at the mention of Lord Riley however, there was something about that man that he didn't like. Darian couldn't quite put his finger on it but there was a sense of desperation and almost evil around that man. He shook his head to clear it of the thoughts and enjoyed the rest of his time with Kanya for that night, knowing that tomorrow would be another long ay parted from her side.

Kanya let out a soft moan as she returned his kiss. Her lips tingled as he parted them and answered her questions. "I have figured it out" she said teasingly as he looked at her with a question as to what was she referring to. "you plan to kiss me to stop me from talking" She smiled and laughed "I do hope you have a lot of those stored up, for i am afraid Sir, that i shall simply talk and talk just to get another."

She couldn't help but laugh as he pulled her back into his arms for another. She had never been happier then she was with him at this very moment.

For the next three nights they continued the same routine, a bit of reading, then sneaking off together into the woods to talk freely and share thoughts and to learn more about each other. Each night she also told him how a new calling request came from Lord Riley and how she again refused him.

The Fourth night was the ball, Kanya dressed in crimson gown that made her emeralds sparkle. Her auburn hair was just so, but this time when she walked down the stairs, not only was she on time, but she looked Darian directly in the eyes and took his arm. They arrived at the ball and they stayed connected through the night. A brief walk in the garden where she stopped and had him close his eyes. "This" she said softly "is for the long hours in which you are away from me, so you'll never forget that you have a piece of my heart, you can open your eyes." As he opened his eyes she handed him a heart shaped locket that contained a piece of her hair. It was the symbol that she bequeathed her heart only to him.

Smiling at her gift, Darian fastened it around his neck and admired it from his vantage point. He took her arm again in his own and they continued their walk through the gardens. Chuckling he pulled her off the path and taking her face in his hands gave her a playful kiss on each eyelid before claiming her mouth as his own for a brief moment. He pulled back watching her reaction to the onslaught of kisses and smiled as she looked up at him.

Behind him someone cleared their throat and Darian whirled around to face the person. There stood a very unsteady Lord Riley, with a bottle of what looked like brandy in his hand. Darian watched his movements as he stood in front of Kanya, protecting her from him.

"Is there something I can help you with Lord Riley?..." Darian asked, a bit preturbed that his time with Kanya was being interrupted

"that wench is going to marry me" Riley told Darian rather forcefully. "She's been leading me on since the last ball, and I've had enough. Get your ass over here girl" Riley demanded.

Kanya stood behind Darian holding his hand. Kanya moved in front of Darian. "No Lord Riley you are mistaken, you will never be the man i choose, and will never be a contender for the man that i love." that was the first time Kanya had ever admitted out loud that she loved Darian. But unfortunately it was enough to push Lord Reily over the edge.

Darian pushed Kanya over to the side. Just as Lord Riley pulled out his pistol and shot Darian in the stomach. Kanya screamed and tried to go to him but Lord Riley put the gun to her head grabbing her by the hair dragging her with him. She screamed and screamed crying hysterically for her love, as Lord Reily dragged her through the back gate to his carriage tossing her in and ordering the driver to go .

By the time people came running out to Lord Silver she was no where to be found.

Kanya screamed and yelled scratching and clawing at Lord Reily like a wild cat until he back handed knocking her out cold. He carried her inside like a sack of potatoes down to the dungeon in his castle. He dropped her on the floor of a cell and spoke to the maids. "Wash her down and get her ready we'll be married in the morning and the wench will learn what it means to obey. Be sure she's chained down or she'll claw your eyes out" The maids looked fearfully at him "yes mi lord" they replied and tended to the girl who was still unconscious.

Lord Reily went up to his room and had his wounds tended to. She would leave a scar across what he determined was a handsome face.

Darian stayed hidden in the shadows of the trees as the guests came to look for him. He looked down at his white dress shirt that had a ring of blood but no longer had a hole in his body. God damn that man, Darian thought to himself, He has taken my love from me and tried to kill me. I swear if he has harmed her I'll make him pay double the cost.

A low growl emanated from Darian's throat as he grasped the locket around his neck. Normally a vampire could track almost anyone through the night, as it is their domain, but because of the locket that he held he would be able to find Kanya easier. Darian began to make a few gestures and shortly he had an image of where Kanya was being kept. He set off at a run in the direction it lead him all the while growling about how Lord Riley was going to pay for what he had done.

Several minutes later, Darian reached Riley's residence and jumping over the wall strode towards the house. The dogs Riley had for protection simply cowered at the sight of Darian, for his vampiric nature was no longer hidden. Darian walked to the front door and very promptly kicked the solid wood door in, scaring the wits out of the butler who was coming to see what was going on with the dogs outside.

"Where is she?" Darian asked, his eyes vivid and green with rage. The butler looked into those fearsome eyes and merely pointed downstairs, towards the dungeon. Darian hurried down the steps, taking them two at a time. He found Kanya in one of the cells being tended to by the maids and he made his way in ordering them to release her from the chains. The maids, already afraid of their master, found Darian a bit more frightening and they unbound Kanya.

Darian kneeled to inspect her and make sure she was unharmed. He found a large red welt on the side of her face and the rage poured forth. He heard bootsteps on the floor above and discerned it was Riley coming to see what happened to his from door. Darian stood and awaited Riley in the cell that contained Kanya.

Riley came bounding down the stairs with a sword. "How the Hell" he said looking at Darian who looked a little bit more then pissed off at the fact his woman was in Rileys dungeon.

"She didn't once ask for you" sneered Riley "she called my name like a banchie as i took what belonged to me. Couldn't wait till the wedding, she's an eager wench"
Now you know she's soiled, nothing to save their. If i let her go not even you can marry her since she's spread those nice ivory thighs."

Riley smiled with triumph hoping that he'd be able to fool Darian into believing he'd already had liberties with her. "Look Silver, i killed you once, I don't know how you lived, but I'll be happy to do it again, or you can just leave an I'll make an honest woman out of the mouthy whore. She needs a man to teach her what her place is, as you can see all it took was one hit and she shut up. Its a start with a witch like that. My man is going to get the guards, nows your chance to leave alive"

Darian laughed at Riley, the sound of it echoing off the stone walls like it had a mind of its own. The rage in Darian had reached its peak and he reveled in the fact that Riley, who had hurt his beautiful Kanya, was going to be on the receiving end of it. Darian lowered his eyes to Riley's blade and grinned again.

"First you shoot me and now you think I am going to let you stab me? Don't make me laugh Riley. And do you honestly think I would believe the lies that spill forth from your mouth?" Darian growled a bit and unsheathed his own rapier, letting the blade balance carefully in his hand. He leveled his green eyes at Riley and smiled, the vibrant hue in them quite unnerving.

"En Garde." Darian lunged at Riley, his rapier moving fast with ages of practice. Darian wanted to make him feel despair and pain, both of which he was preparing to deliver to Riley. Darian parried and dodged Riley's blows with the sword, making the once-hailed fencing champion frustrated that he couldn't hit his target. Darian countered a low slice from his opponent and slashed his left arm in retaliation. Riley growled and tried a thrust at Darian which was dodged, but in his frustration Riley slashed wildly back catching Darian's arm. Riley smirked and made for another lunge which was blocked followed by Darian's booted foot connecting with Riley's stomach. The blow knocked the wind right out of Riley and Darian stood above him for the coup de'grace, his rapier firmly at Riley's throat.

"Should you ever come near her or her family again Riley, I promise I will dispatch you myself. But I will do it in such a fashion that will leave you agonizing for days before I finish it. And as for your lies about not being able to marry her..." Darian's sword point dropped to Riley's crotch as his eyes burrowed into Rileys "that was never what I wanted out of Kanya. I love her body, mind, and soul and should I find any mark upon her besides the welt on her cheek, I shall return to pay you in return thrice fold." With that Darian stabbed Riley in the thigh cleanly and resheathed his sword. "That was for the welt you left on her, you pompous ass."

Darian turned to collect Kanya and found her awake and wide-eyed at the sight of him standing there alive. "I guess I have some explaining to do but not here. Not until you are safe from here." Darian said as he picked her up in his strong arms and ran with her outside and into the dark forest, carrying her home on foot.

Kanya's arms wrapped around his neck as the tears fell from her eyes. He seemed to run with her with a floating ease, that she was too in shock to acknowledge. The first thing he needed to do was get her home so her parents wouldn't worry over their disappearance.

Darian carried her through the front doors of the manor setting her down on the lounge requiring a cool cloth for her. Her father came rushing in demanding explanation as her mother ran to Kanya with a classic concern.

Kanya said nothing as her eyes never left him, her mind trying to rationalize what happened. She saw him get shot, she saw the blood, she saw him fall. Now he stood there with simply blood and a hole upon his shirt. But that was all. His arm she saw his arm cut. Only the shirt was torn now. He was alive, her love and her heart were alive.

Darian explained to her father that Lord Riley stole Kanya from their walk by gun point, that he had grazed him with the bullet and thought him left for dead. But instead he had followed them. Kanyas father thanked him for saving her virtue, and had a legion dispatched to collect and arrest him for abducting his daughter and attempting to murder Lord Silver.

Kanyas mother determined her daughter was burning up with fever and a doctor was needed. But she also needed to placed in bed. Lord Silver again lifted her effortlessly and carried her up the stairs to her room. Her eyes stared into his as he placed her upon the bed. As he tried to leave she held his hand requesting he stay. Kanya's mother witnessed her daughters request and had a chair placed in the room for him so he could stay with her.

A doctor was sent for and Kanya was beginning to fade out of consciousness as her eyes started to glaze over she whispered in a tone only his hearing would pick up "i love you". Her fever then took hold, and she was placed into a delirious deep sleep. Through out the night she cried out, tossing her head, reliving the evenings events over and over. The only thing that would sooth her was the sound of Darian's voice.

In the meantime Lord Riley was arrested and charged with attempted murder and kidnapping. If Kanya died they would add a manslaughter charge as well. She may not have been the favorite person, but she was in fact still a noble woman.

Darian stayed by Kanya's side throughout the entire rest of the night. Every time she thrashed, he soothed her with calm words of how he was here and how he wouldn't leave her side. However every time she cried out about him being shot, he winced knowing that he would have to come up with some sort of explanation. He would eventually have to tell her what he actually was, but not yet. Not until she asked and right now he was more worried about her fever coming down and he made every effort to help break her sickness.

"Don't slip away from me Kanya," Darian whispered softly in her ear, "I don't think I could take the heartbreak of losing you so soon after finding you. Please don't give up the fight, be strong and pull through like I know you will." Darian sat back in the chair holding her hand throughout the night and most of the day, waiting for her to come to and making sure the maids didn't open the blinds on her windows.

Somewhere in her mind she had been lost. The shock of seeing him die, the hole, the blood, the doubling over, and then the way she saw him alive and fighting for her was too much for her. Kanya cried out a few times and found herself slowly coming back, he was calling her back. "I'm coming" she tried to yell finding herself still lost in her mind.

Kanya's mother paced, her Father spend much of his time in his study with a bottle secretly blaming her mother for her daughters condition. If she hadn't of kept pushing the girl, and forcing all of those men knowing they would be humiliated.

Kanya slowly fluttered her sea blue eyes finding herself in her own bed. Her hand warm and tingly, and her fever had broke. She gasped as her mind came awake..Darian was dead, no he was alive. She turned her head and looked at him staring at her. His face full of worry and concern. He was alive, she hadn't dreamed it. "you saved me again" she said softly her voice raspy and throat dry.
Her eyes never leaving his as he lent down to kiss her cheek, her forehead and her lips.

She smiled softly as he broke their kiss "water" she said softly and he rose to get it for her. He yelled out the door that she was awake, causing her parents to rush to her side. Her mother fussed over her like a mother normally would, and her Father had tears in her eyes as he hugged her.

Kanyas eyes stayed fixated on Darian though. Looking away once in a while to meet those that were speaking to her, but always coming back to his. Eventually her father dragged her mother from the room saying she needed rest. Darian seemed as if he was going to leave and she said "no, read to me".
Her eyes never leaving him, fighting the tiredness she felt afraid if she closed her eyes he wouldn't be there when she awoke. She had so many questions and it would be a couple days before they could sneak off into the woods again
so she could ask him those questions that burned in her mind.

Darian stayed with Kanya during the night, reading to her from the book of werewolves each time he stayed. He would sleep in the chair next to her bedside, in case she ever called out for him in her sleep.

It wasn't Kanya that was having trouble sleeping anymore though. Darian had been a bit restless since he saw the questioning look in Kanya's eyes. He knew that look well, especially from her, as it meant he was about to be bombarded with questions. The problem this time is he didn't know how to answer those questions, at least not in a way that he didn't fear the consequences.

He woke with a start one evening, the sweat coming to his brow steadily. The nightmare had come again, the one where he told Kanya the truth and she turned her back on him. He covered his face with his hands and sighed into them. When he told her he would have to make sure that she wouldn't run away, that she wouldn't leave him, but if he forced her to stay he would be no better than Riley. She would just have to make that decision for herself.

Darian left a note for Kanya on the day she was feeling better, telling her to meet him that night so they could take an evening stroll in the woods. It said to meet him under the tree where he saved her the first time.

Kanya was finally at the point to where she felt like herself. She had managed to avoid asking Darian all the questions that haunted her. Over and over she had seen him die. Trying to find the point in which she could have been wrong. She saw the sword slice his arm, the blood, an then no wound, not even a scratch remained. She contemplated everything leaving out what felt like floating deciding she must have been in shock.

Receiving his note made her smile, how she longed to escape the confines of the manor. The walls were seemingly closing in on her. Her mother was being motherly which in itself was frightening. But more then anything she longed for some fresh air, and the company of the man who had so many questions to answer.

Sneaking out of the house proved to be as simple as always. They had always left the house together. She walked to the stables and her horse pawed anxiously at the ground "shh i know boy, I'm sorry" she advised her steed who'd longed for their runs. Pulling herself upon his back they headed like the wind for the woods.

On the approach to the tree she could see a faint glow of a fire. The feeling of warmth that she had for him returning to her closer they got. She slowed the horse and Darian helped her down. Her eyes danced as she looked into his.
There was something about his touch that always made her tingle. Something about the way she got lost in his eyes.

He took her hand and led her to the fire where they sat. The time arrived, and she could tell he was aware. She was half in his lap and his arms where wrapped around her as he kissed the top of her head. "I saw you die" she said lightly. "i've played it over and over again in my head, i saw the blood, i saw you bend over and drop to the ground. Then you were there, alive, a hole in your shirt, a shirt covered in blood, but no wound. And he hit you with his sword, i saw it again, yet there was no scratch no wound. Darian i know what i saw, but if you tell me i'm going mad i will believe you, for only you would tell me the truth.

Darian took a deep breath, his chest still feeling tight though. He looked down into the beautiful eyes of the woman he loved so dearly and knew that he had to tell her, even if she hated him for it.

"Kanya, I love you very dearly. I have something to tell you and you probably won't want to hear it but here it goes. You know how you asked me about vampires and werewolves and other creatures of the night? And you asked me why I could talk about werewolves but not vampires? Well my love that would be because I am one." Darian said all in a rush, hoping that she would just pass over it like it was nothing. He knew she liked the stories of vampires and that she found the concept novel but how would she feel being in love with one?

"I know you may hate me now and never want to see me again. I would fully understand if you called an inquisition on my head, it wouldn't be the first time. But I want you to know that everything I have done or said to you has been true and I take nothing back especially when it comes to my feelings for you." Darian dropped his eyes not wanting to see the hate or disdain in hers as he said this.

Kanya sat still in his arms as he revealed to her his darkest secret. Processing it quietly, she simply stayed where she was. "I do not hate you" she said softly as her mind still continued to process what he said. All of her life she had known they existed, heard stories of what powers they may have. But to actually meet one?, To find herself in love with one. Her mind played back the events since she'd known him. She began to talk as if working it out in her head. "the swooning of the girls at the first ball, the way they all seemed to lean close to you, they were under a spell of sorts. The wild cat that didn't seem to put a scratch upon you, the way you picked me up on the horse which seemed effortless, and the wounds that were real, that disappeared" she shook her head still trying to process. "Your urge for travel and adventures, your possession of the Lycan book, the way you avoided certain questions." Again she spoke with more of working it out in her mind process. "It all makes sense" she said softly. "the man in the woods when i was young, was that you?"

Darian thought about her last question a bit, trying to remember the event clearly in his mind. It was then he finally remembered the little girl being lost in the woods, the tears running down her cheeks.

"Yes beloved Kanya, it was me that led you to safety. I had forgotten for the longest time about the scared little girl that I helped. Your story before had sounded familiar but not because it was your first scandal. It was familiar because I was the other person involved in it." Darian laughed a little to himself as his mind came to another realization. "It seems I have been saving you all your life and I hope to continue to save you. I want to be with you Kanya, you make my world seem so much brighter and more vibrant."

Darian looked down at her, just holding her in his arms as they talked. His head lowered towards her and he kissed her very lightly, the kiss upside down but enjoyable.

Her lips tingled and he kissed her softly. She slowly broke the kiss and rose from him. "I need a moment to think" she said softly as she paced back and forth. Kanya was a true believer in fate, an fate had allowed the same man to intervene time and time again to save her. It allowed this man to boldly face her when no others dared.
But he wasn't a man, he was a vampire. The thing that had fascinated her for years. He was the reason, it was him that saved her from what was in the woods that night. "Lycan?" she asked looking at him "Is that what you saved me from? was it Lycan?"

Everything was becoming clear, it wasn't what he was that she had fallen in love with, but who he was. He was gallant and charming, he could stand toe to toe with her and fail to back down no matter how hard she pushed. He pursued her when no other dare.

"What does this mean?" she then questioned before he had a chance to answer, "you love me, a human, what does that mean? Could i bare your children? would you make me what you are? How would we live? would you have me be your food source? your mistress? your wife? " She stopped now as she looked at him waiting for him to answer her bombarding of questions.
