lay at sea

Alan

Alan heard people screaming and the screams were getting worse. Alan tried to scramble up but up and down were abstract concepts at the moment. and in the dark he may as well be flailling blinfolded in a dryer. Suddenly Carl hit the emergency lights. Alan reached up and grabbed on to part of the bar. He slid on the broken dishes and careened another 10 feet. This time he rolled with it and as he it the wal he grabbed the light fixture and stood up. The red emergency lights gave everything a grim visage, he scrambled towards Diana and had just reached her when Carl opened the door and started ordering everybody out.

Carl felt the boat turned. It was tipping upside down. He couldn't believe it, such a big ship going under so quickly. The room was only full up to their ankles, but water came in from the stairs, making it half filled in just a few seconds. Carl made a snap decision. He closed the door.
He closed it, looking them all in. The water stopped, for the moment. He looked at who was inside. Just the four of them, he hoped everyone else was safe. He had to worry about the four of them for the moment. The water was up to their waists, but Roselyn was swimming in it.
Carl helped her to stand up.
"We're going to be all right," he held her tight. She was freezing. He didn't blame her, the water was cold, very cold. They must had hit a cold pocket or something, it was supposed to be warm.
He held her close to him, trying to get some warmth in her.
"There's only one way out of here," he said aloud, "The window. It's broken so we should all be able to get out of it."
She was still shivering, he held her close.

Diana clung to Alan tightly shamlessly burying her face in his chest needing his warmth and strength. She looked up at him and for a moment their eyes locked. If the circumstances had been different she would have kissed him then. It felt so right to be in his arms, but right now she couldn't think about that she had to get him and her out of here alive. Looking to Carl then to the window she looked back up at Alan "Lets go"

Alan

Alan clung to anything that was bolted down and Diana. She was an oasis of sanity in the surreal hell that had just befallen them. He grabbed a chair and hacked away at the last vestages of window that were left in the window that Carl had pointed out he took his sleeve and cleared away the glass. He looked deep into Dianas and whispered trust me. "Ladies first" He hoisted Diana towards the window and motioned for Carl to help him get Roselyn out as well.Alan watched the water rise nervously and wondered if they could all get out in time.

Roselyn grabbed Carl's hand as she was boosted up. "I'll be ok now . help yourself out to . " she yelled to him . She waited for the other girl to get out (sorry siren, I forgot how to spell your persons name) before climbing out of the window , herself. Roselyn was worried. She let go of Carl's hand and climbed though the window and into the sea. Thinking this was the end she swam to the opening where air would fill her lungs and she would be alive again . Up at the top she saw one boat and swam toward it . Seeing that Darren was in it she hoped he would forgive her and let her be in the boat . She hoped there was enough room for her and the others from the gallery.

Darren saw Roselyn swimming toward the boat. Being nice for once he helped her in.
" There are others coming ." Roselyn said and shivered.
" how many?"
"three others. " Roselyn looked at the sinking boat. "will there be enough room?"
"yeah"

Diana pushed herself out of the window swimming like she had never swam before. She pushed her way to the surface of the water taking in deep breaths when she reached the top. Looking around frantically she looked for Alan, completely ignoring the life boat that floated only feet from her. "Alan? Alan!?"

Carl helped Roselyn out. He was so afraid for her, wondering if she would make it ok. Diana was already out there, and there had to be some people up top who made it out. She would be all right, really she would.
He then looked at Alan, "Your next."
He could see protest in the man's eyes, "For the next thirty seconds this is my galley. Now get out."
Carl helped the man get through. They would be without a ship for some time. He didn't want to, with the ship constantly turning sideways and water rushing in, but he had to think of the safety of this crew.
He quickly ran/swam over to the kitchen area, grabbing a sack. Bottled water, and other dry foodstuffs made their way in. It didn't take long, only a minute or two. He wanted to get more, but there wasn't time, the window was already submerged under water. He would have to swim down to get out. The entire ship was nearly sideways. He swam back to the wall, which was in fact the ceiling.
Something behind him cracked. Carl looked just in time to see the door burst open. He flinched, water came rushing in. It completely filled the galley in less than a minute. Carl barely had time to think, much less breath. The water covered everything.
Underwater, he felt around for the window. He hadn't bothered to look where it was, this wasn't going very well at all. He flinched as he thought about what he had to do. Open his eyes to see where the window was. The coldness got to him, but he couldn't let something like that stop him now, not when he was so close.
His eyes sputtered open. A bright sting instantly got him. He stopped, just for a moment to adjust. His lungs began screaming for air. It was a dull scream, but it was a sing of things to come. He was almost out of air and all he had done was opened his eyes.
Carl swam, the sack attached to his arm. He reached the window, pulling himself through. He emerged outside, but still underwater. The ship had rolled so now he was on the bottom of the ship. There didn't seem to be any way up to the surface. His lungs were about to burst. No, this isn't how it would happen. He had to try.
Think smarter, not harder.
Carl swam back inside, going up as far as he could. He swam past the galley, and past the burst open door, and up the flight of stairs. He swam for all his life, because that was exactly what he was swimming for. He moved for a door on the top of the boat, which was supposed to be the right side. He opened a dooor, fresh air blew into his face. He breathed in, feeling life return to him. Quickly he made his way inside, along with a bunch of water. Carl closed the door as quickly as he could. It was Roselyn's room. He couldn't believe it. Roselyn's room. There was another window on the far side. He looked at it. From what he could tell the ship had already submerged. It was a good 5 feet down now. They must be worried sick about him. He wasn't out yet though. He could still do this.
All he needed was a little luck.
Carl made a motion to break the window, but something stopped him. A note. The same not he had given her earlier. He quickly pocketed it, and, a teddy bear he saw on her bed. Might as well let her have something, the poor girl had been through so much.
He broke the window.
Water came crashing in, it would have froze him in his place if he hadn't already been used to it. Carl took a deep breath and shot through the window, kicking and fighting to the surface. He would live. He would make this happen. There was no way they would stop him now.
Carl hit the surface.
"WHOOO HOOOO!!!!"
He screamed as loud as he could, overjoyed for life. One more day that death couldn't not claim victory over his carcass.
"Ha ha," he laughed out loud, slappnig the water. It was so good to be alive, and to feel the sun. To actually feel the sun. That cold spot was over, and the water felt warm all around him.
He looked around. There a small boat, people seemed to be gathering over there. Carl swam over, cheering all the way.
(Sorry, I was on a roll, couldn't stop myself)

Roselyn was worried , she only saw alan and daina(did i spell it right?)"Carl?" She cried looking around."CARL???"spinning around in her seat she looked for him and couldn't find him.'oh god! he must have..' NO! She musn't think about it , she wouldn't . where was he? Even though she had just met him she knew ther was something between them. something strong. Looking around again the same sicking thought came to her ' what if he...he couldn't... i won't feel the same about people if ... he can't so shut up Roselyn ' Roselyn thought and she hit her self on the head. She saw him surface "CARL!!!!!!!!!"She cried and almost stood up . she was so happy, he was alive . She was ever so glad . She had an erge to jump out of the boat and swim to him and cover him in hugs and kisses. But she wouldn't . First , she was in a boat of safty if she got out who knows if she could get back in .then also he was swimming toward her . she smiled

'Carl? Why was Carl so important to her ?' Darren thought bitterly . ' i should be her important , not some cook.' he thought ,angrey with the world . He helped Daina in the boat and then waited for alan to reach the boat.
"are you sure we can fit all theese people in the boat ? " Roselyn asked .
"sure Rosey. this boat is pretty big and can fit 30 people in it . so 5 people would be a small amount .
"Thank god . " Roselyn smiled again looking out at Carl who was coming up fast.

Carl came up to the small lifeboat. He saw Rozelyn's smiling face. A happiness fell over him, he knew she was safe, but just seeing her here made it all better. Yet he still couldn't understand it. There were nearly 50 men on that ship, and only five were alive.
Another man helped him into the boat. Carl thanked the man kindly.
Scanning the horizon he looked for more survivors. The ocean wavered here and there. There were tons of little things that floated to the surface, but nothing that resembled a human. He didn't feel all right anymore. Surely, if he could have made it out, someone else might have had a chance.
Carl fell back in the boat, exhasperated. He landed on the sack he had been carrying. Something jumped to his mind.
"Oh, I saved you a little something," Carl said. In a flash he opened the sack and came up with a soggy teddy bear.
"It's all I could grab before I left," he handed it to Roselyn.

Alan

Alan tried to argue with Carl but Carl actually dived deeper into the boat. Alan followed for a second and then realized the insanity of the situation and tried to swim back up. In the tide that was shifting Alan lost sight of what was up and what was down. Alan released some of the precious air in his lungs and watched which direction the bubbles went. Alan swam as hard as he could in that direction. He was begining to see spots before his eyes when finally he broke the surface. He was lightheaded and slowly slipping under when he heard someone call his name. "Diana" Alan sighed happily and began to swim towards the angelic voice. His eyesight was clearing and he was never so happy to see anyone in his life...

"oh thank you ! " Roselyn sm,iled and hugged the bear. She looked around for whatever Carl was looking for. She saw some one! " I see someone!" She cried and pointed to the last of the ship. Some girl stood on th last of the boat shouting for help. Seeing the little boat she dived into the water and swam toward the boat.
" My boyfriend, where is he?" She cried as darren helped her in the boat.
"If he's not her e he is probley still in the boat . " Darren looked down at h is wet feet. "WE lost a lot of good workers in that boat. "

Diana helped Alan into the boat and hugged him feircly thankful she was alive. Then without thinking about it she kissed him, it was a quick kiss nothing special but it made her blood begin to boil within and she had to bury her face in his chest so he would not see where her thoughts were or see the blush that covered her face.

Alan

I meander over to the boat, I am not a great swimmer, but I am competent eneough to keep afloat. I see Diana and my strength increases. She smiles and helps me into the boat. I hold her as if she is my life and suddenly she kisses me. It is brief but magical and she looks away from me right after. I hope she doesnt regret the kiss. I know all to well how emotions can go haywire in impossible situations. I sigh and hold her glad to be alive.

Everything was fine for them now. They are all alive at least, now they needed to get things organized.
He took inventory, only two people weren't with him when the boat went down. That was his best shot.
"Listen," he called to them, "Were there any radio messages about a mayday called to any other vessel's nearby. Does anyone even know this ship went down?"
He saw the look's on their faces. There was a good chance that someone in the radio room called an S.O.S. but without any proof they were dead in the water.
Carl shuffled around, moving people, looking under their asses. He found what he was looking for. The emergency guide. It held some water, a knife, two signal flares, and a few other survival tools.
"All right. We need to all keep our heads together. We might be, "It was more than likely they were," the only survivors to this wreck. I propose we let off one flare now, and hope for a recue. We'll keep the other one just in case."
He didn't want to be the leader, exactly, but technically he was the highest ranking officer. A cook, captain of a boat, that'll be the day.

Roselyn nodded as Carl gave out information so people would know she and the others were alive . she stared at him after watching the little fling with the two (lovers?)(friends?)(bed buddies?) she didn't know what they are but she felt the need to do the same thing with carl , but she wouldn't . she was to wise to let her feelings soar. she looked at the new girl in the boat. The girls hair a blonde red . he eyes a fiery green. she was pretty . her chest grew and shunk with her quick breathes. she wondered how she was in bed . NO ! She cried at herself and bite her tounge, no such thought ever grew to her mind before like this one . she scolded herself and looked at her feet

Diana looked somewhat shyly up at Alan fighting and losing as the blush covered her face. Doing her best to ignore it she asked him "Are you alright? I am so glad you made it, I was so worried I would never see you again" her arms were still wrapped tightly around him and she knew she could stay like this forever.

Alan

Alan held Diana tightly. "I'm fine now. besides theres no reason to worry. I had this wonderful lady that I made a promise to when she jumped into the water, and I never break my promises." He smiled trying to make light of the situation , but in truth Diana lent him strength. He had never been a great swimmer and he could very easily be one of those poor unfortunates that didnt make it. He held Diana and sighed.

After a few moments of savoring the feeling of being in Alan's arms she looked to the captain. "What are we going to do now, we are stranded in this small boat with very little food and water" she glanced around "any ideas?"

Carl squinted as he held up the flare. Squeezing the trigger led a loud boom go into the sky. It shot straight up, sending a firey tail after it. Carl smiled at his work, if anyone was in ten miles they would see it. Surely they would be rescued then.
Carl looked down at the other one. No, he would have to save it until absolutely necessary. The rest of the supplies as well. Nothing could be spared, absolutely nothing.
"I don't know what to do," he said, "We need to wait here, someone had to see that flare. In a few hours we will be rescued."
He could see the doubt and fear in everyone's eyes, "If that doesn't happen we'll try to find some land. There has to be an island or something around here we can go too."
He moved over to the emergency pack, there was a cover for the small raft. He asked the other men to help him set it up. No reason feeling the hot sun all day.

Roselyn jumped slightly as Carfl shot the flare . She watched him with a look of curiosity. Wondering what was going on inside him that makes him know what to do in an emergency. She sighed as she looked at the other people. There were the two that were hugging , Carl,Darren, and this new girl her blondish hair swimming over her mind, who was crying over her lost of a boyfriend. The new girl was sitting next to her so she leaned over and whispered comfert to her .
" what is your name ,girl?" Roselyn whispered and smelt her hair. It smelt of coconut .
"my name is Kate " She said and brushed her hair away from her green eyes.
"Kate , why are you crying ?" Roselyn sighed and looked past Kate at Carl and then looked back at Kate.
"my boy friend was on that boat , he never camre back from going to the gallery... he went to get wine ... he had poposed to me ..... and I'll never see him agai---" With the end of the word she broke into sobs .
Roselyn held her soft hand and stroked it while whispering "It will be ok ... maybe he is still alive . He may come up anytime now . " Kate reminded Roselyn of her old friend Christina ... soft and small. Thier hair was the same colour but Christina's eyes were a soft blue .
"I'll never see him again ,,, never ... " she cried for ever...Roselyn did nothing but stroke her hand and whisper over and over again that it would be ok .

Alan

Alan listened to Kate's story and hugged Diana thankfully for one last moment, Then Alan quietly asked carl 3 questions, If there a compass, a map and did anyone know there last location. Alan figured they should paddle while it was cool, when the sun rose it would turn the water into a mirror and that wouldnt do to well for the rowers.

Diana stayed close to Alan feeling grief for Kate's loss. Looking up at Alan she felt an immense relief and gladness that he had survived. Closing her eyes feeling suddenly very exhasted she leaned against Alan relaxing in his embrace and for once feeling safe.

Alan

Alan looked up into the starry sky and winced as he rembered how much he wished he could change his life. Well the last 24 hours had certainly been a change. He felt Diana curl up closer to him and slowly the adrenaline began to slip away from him. He sighed and held her warmly.

Carl glanced over at the red bag. It had held the flare gun, as well as the extra flare. He looked inside. Ahhh, a compass. He began shifting through the small amounts of food and drink.
A map.... a map.
Ah hah, a map of the surrounding area. That helped a little. Now if they only knew where in the hell they were. He asked everyone if they knew anything of the last coordinates.
No one knew anything. It was a shame, without coordinates all they really knew was they were on the blue part of the map, and which way was north.
He shook his head at Alan. No luck. It was afternoon, a nice breeze had come in. It felt quite good, Carl couldn't believe how nice it was.
"Everyone keep your eyes peered, if any ship saw that flare they will come."
He glanced over at Roselyn. She looked troubled. He moved to her side, "Hey, is everything all right?"
