Kids learn Braille the fun way

Lego has unveiled a project to help blind and visually impaired children learn Braille in a “playful and engaging way” amid concerns that fewer children are learning the system because of audiobooks and computer programs.

Its new “Braille Bricks” will be moulded with the same studs used for letters and numbers in the Braille alphabet. They will also feature printed characters to allow sighted teachers and family to read them.

that's pretty damned awesome... i'll refrain from suggesting who here it could help, but that's a really valuable application of science. i love these moves forward to help those needing it. thanks for posting that link

how cool is that?

That is pretty cool. A couple of years ago I did some work with a school for the visually impaired. I had an idea to have some of my cards have my name and number in Braille. I asked around and there did not seem to be a device I could get or a place that could do it easily. One of the teachers asked for some of my cards and had me describe what the layout of my card was later I realized so that she would know what spaces are unused.

She had her students hand-braille my cards as an exercise. I only ever gave one of those out because of the work involved.

I knew her and knew that she taught there but I didn't know that specifically she was the Braille teacher. Braille is definitely a dying language.

A person with perfect eyesight steps on those damn things and curses the man who invented them. I can't imagine how awful it must be for blind people. I bet their feet are nothing but a mass of cuts and bruises from those bricks from hell.

OTH they are indeed some of the coolest building toys ever. The Star Wars sets alone are simply amazing.

We have a mini Legoland here. I take the small one there probably once or twice a month. They're on site model-maker is amazing. They've got all of these buildings that represent iconic Phoenix locations and they're really really good.

This is an ice cream parlor my parents went to.60 years ago

For my purposes the size of this place is great because I can sit somewhere central and she can run herself ragged and I can keep an eye on her better than most places where you blink you lose a child.
