It's a fact that Lennon was helping to raise mony for bullet proof vests for NYC cops, so he seems to have matured. But I've also read that he might not have been all that psychologically balanced and was insecure and overly jealous of anyone who showed attention to Yoko.

He was too much a humanitarian to be a Republican. But I believe he was just too apolitical to veer one way or another. Dude knew what a crock both parties were and are.
