Let's talk Ryder Cup, shall we?

It would be such a shame for this thread to break down into the kind of insults that have been passed by American supporters to the European players in the past and I therefore don't think that Cate should be allowed the exemption. But if she is allowed it I will of course remain the courteous well mannered Englishman that I am and not return fire with fire.

By the way Cate I actually have reservations about Langer as a captain. His record on the tour and in the Ryder Cup is fantastic but I am not sure about his man management skills - still I guess like you guys with Sutton I'll just have to wait.

Have you checked outRyder Cup its quite an interesting site.

Oh and may the best team win.

Cate, I believe that Wanderer has a good point. I vote for sportsmansheep at all costs. ;)

Langer is well known for his meticulous preparation and attention to detail. While it is not good form to root against one's opponent in golf, it will not disappoint me if Langer gets so caught up in counting the trees that he misses the forest altogether.

I shall refrain from any unsportman/sportwomanship remarks, I kindly as to be forgiven for my previous "baaaa"s and will not resort to any further "baaaa"s from this point forward.

Wanderer, yes I've been looking at that site for some time now, I do so appreciate your kindness in bringing it to my attention though. You are a nice man.

I agree Kissop, Langer is a detail to death kind of golfer and do hope they've planted a few extra trees out there. But I've always liked him from a female point of view! lol

I see Cat has been doing sheep impressions, quite what this has to do with golf escapes me. However, i would dearly love to see her impression of a pig or cow! ;)

As for our captain, i'm not overly confident either, after all, he is german!

This is too frightening for words Cate now playing reverse psychology on me. Can't we go back to sending insults please.

Horatio has so eloquently said what I was trying not to say about Langer - so I won't add to that.

Anyway I personally never that convinced a bout what influence a captain has in this tournament - the only thing he does is put together the pairings and the order they will play in. After that is down to the players themselves to play well - they are all professionals at the top of their games and they should know what to do.

One tries to speak ones mind wanderer.

Do you think that the captains have much say in the pairings. I mean theres some pretty big egos, particularly on the american side, i imagine that theres a bit of negotiating who plasy with who.

Wanderer, I can't imagine how I missed this earlier.

Surely you don't want the best team to win - how could you cheer for the European side if you did? ;) ;)

Well, well, well. I have to refrain as I said but if you could read my lips or know what I was thinking........

I think the captain can influence his team, as can the team bouy each other. Each man may not see his strengths and weaknesses in this format and having that other set of eyes can benefit all.

As for Langer being a German, I can understand that maybe you have a few holdover thoughts there but UK needed to bring the whole continent in to beat the US team. Oh well,...... I like Berharnd very much. And that is all I have to say about that! lol

It seems Cat is now doing forrest gump as well as sheep, hmmmmm!

As for Kissophiles comments on the best team, i believe i shall let that one slide.....for now!

Isn't it a fact though, that the Europeans get on better as a team, where as the Americans are more individualistic, hence their ability to win more singles.

More refraining here! Seems I am the only one refraining too!

Admiral I think they all do better with a medal play, it is the tour play. I think to go from individual to team play is difficult for them all in that the mentality needs to alter a few times during the match. Just as a singles tennis player would have a difficult time being a doubles player. Both have similiar skills but a different attitude as well. Not an easy adjustment for some of these men I agree, but on both sides of the pond.

edited to say: As you will see as this thread progresses, I never have nothing to say ever! LOL And wanderer and kisso can attest to that unfortunately, but I know we are REFRAINING!

My guess is that the European side spent so many years thinking of themselves as underdogs that they built up a culture of needing to think and behave like a team in order to have any chance at winning. That continued and now it's quite impressive.

I think it was Ben Hogan who introduced the American team at the opening banquet as "the twelve best golfers in the world." It may have been true then, but it hardly is now. A few years ago Raymond Floyd used Hogan's words in the same setting and it merely stirred up the pot. It was an unfortunate choice and was taken as arrogance. While the U. S. hardly has a monopoly on arrogance in the world, we seem to be showing more than our share lately. I sincerely hope that every player on the American team behaves as if he is playing against equals - because they are.

Couldn't have put it better myself - in fact I'm surprised I haven't already said it.

It's just our colonial simplicity. After all, most of us still wear our buckskin jackets when we aren't sitting down to dinner with the natives. ;)

I can't disagree with what Cate says here - unusual I know - doesn't happen often. I particularly agree with the final edited paragraph. I would add that what she says is often worth saying too:)

How am I doing at being nice?

* fainted dead on the floor*

Wow!

Now, Cate, how are we supposed to persuade our European friends that we believe in sportsmanship and civility if you faint at the first sign of it?

If i'm right, when you americans get a little bit upset, you do crazy things like throwing tea into harbours! How bizarre.

Wonders if Cat needs the Kiss of Life?

Well if you noticed, I fainted but got up talking and cheering too!

Admiral I understand something about the location of that harbor! As well as the location of a certain golf course in Brookline...........

Kisso, have no fear, I am not affected by certain charms, English or otherwise. ;)
