cool.

a friend of mine got mcafee when i did (we jumped at the free with rebates thing... plus a free ream of paper deal)... he's completely computer illiterate and thinking of taking his copy back as he hasn't installed it and is now scared to from what i've told him.

he might like to use this. i'd at least give it a look myself as well.

thanks again.

Firewall?

I assume you have MS-XP SP2 on your PC?
SP2 automatically turns on the Windows firewall. When you install McAffee or Norton, it installs its firewall by default. If you want to use those, you need to go to the Windows security panel and be sure to turn OFF the windows firewall. I have seen this cause several strange problems. Only have ONE firewall turned on at a time.

I use AVG free exclusively since my Norton expired. It seems to work ok. One annoying thing was that I turned off the scanning of outgoing emails, but it still scans incomming AND outgoing ones.

Use Spybot S&D, Immunize function turned on and updated frequently, to prevent most malware from getting in. (You need to re-immunize every time you get updates.)

And, someone suggested turning OFF their virus program when you go to certain sites...
NEVER, NEVER, EVER turn off your anti-virus program when you are on the internet. If you have DSL or Cable(broadband), be aware you are ON the internet as soon as your PC boots up!!!

Good luck, and keep us informed.

thanks, magic. i DO have sp2 but don't use the windows firewall... mostly because i never had a reason to.

if you're interested, i've found the lavasoft malware utility to be far more effective than spybot's... it has found things that spybot hadn't.

Ahah now the truth is finally out, he's only in it for the free reaming. :p

Lavasoft is much better at finding and removing malware!!!
But, they don't have an immunize function unless you buy it for $27 or more.

And, did you actually go and TURN OFF your Windows firewall, or any other ones that may be lurking around.

All you need is the virus scan and basic firewalls, the rest of that junk just screws up the computer. I had to have mine repaired once, and they took it all off. I use Norton, plus any pataches or updates from Micro soft, and now I never have a problem. Good luck

i see. i never used the immunize feature so i hadn't noticed there wasn't one.

yup. i even went through the registry key to make sure that all the old norton stuff was gone gone gone.

yup. that's what i found out... if anyone's using mcafee, i HIGHLY recommend you eliminate the spamkiller and privacy service components for this very reason. ref my post about how i finally got it to work if you want details.
