Barbara Keeton has finally landed on her feet after a jarring divorce, when her daughter wants to have a talk with her. As she arrives at her daughter's house, everyone close to her has gathered.*First, Barbara worries someone is ill, or something awful has happened.
Instead, her daughter has called everyone to help her get Barbara back out socially again. Her daughter worries she's grown to close to Peter, her son.
Barbara is happy to hear that this is all that it is. There's nothing to worry about, and she turns to Peter to reassure them that there is nothing the matter.
"Tell them, Peter," she urges him.
He's first quiet.
"Go ahead and tell them."*
He stares back, slow to respond.*"Actually... ."
